Envato vs Canva: Which Creative Subscription Fits You?
An unlimited-download asset library for creative software against a browser design editor with its own templates, compared on assets, editing, AI, licensing and price.
The Short Answer
Envato and Canva do different jobs, so many teams use both. Pick Envato if you edit in Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or Photoshop and need a steady supply of video templates, footage, music, fonts and graphics: Core costs $16.50 a month billed annually ($198 a year) for unlimited downloads from 29+ million assets. Pick Canva if you want to make the design itself in a browser editor: the Free plan covers real work, and Pro costs US$144 a year for one person. Envato also sells templates built for Canva. The 5 Rounds
Where each tool actually wins
Round 1 / Asset Library
Round 1: Templates and stock for professional software
The first question is where you'll do the work. Envato supplies files for the apps you already use; Canva supplies templates and media inside its own editor.
- 01Envato's subscription gives unlimited downloads of 29+ million assets: stock video and photos, video templates, music and sound effects, design templates, graphics, 3D, fonts and add-ons.
- 02Envato lists templates for Adobe apps, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Affinity, Blender and Canva, so the same subscription feeds several tools.
- 03Canva Pro includes 3.6M+ templates and 141M+ premium photos, videos, graphics and audio, used inside Canva's editor rather than downloaded for other software.
- 04Envato's fonts can be installed on up to two computers per seat while you're subscribed, and music comes with stems for editors who mix their own soundtracks.
What Canva still got right
Canva's media library is larger by count and needs no download or install step: you drop an asset into a design and it's done.
Round 2 / Design Editing
Round 2: Making the finished design
Canva is a design editor; Envato is mainly a library, with AI tools on top. If nobody on the team uses Photoshop or Premiere Pro, this round decides the comparison.
- 01Canva's drag-and-drop editor covers 1,000+ design types, from social posts and presentations to documents, websites and print, on every plan including Free.
- 02Canva Pro adds social content scheduling and 5 Brand Kits; Business adds 100 Brand Kits, approvals and team admin tools.
- 03Envato's assets are files you open in other software, plus AI tools for generating and editing images, video, voiceovers, music, graphics and mockups.
- 04Envato sells Canva templates, which is one reason designers and marketers often keep both subscriptions.
What Envato still got right
Envato's AI mockup and image tools let you produce product scenes and visuals without opening a separate editor, which suits quick marketing assets.
Round 3 / Price
Round 3: What one person pays per year
- 01Canva has a free plan with 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ media items, 5GB of storage and up to 20 AI uses a month. Envato has no free plan.
- 02Canva Pro costs US$144 a year for one person; Envato Core costs $198 a year billed annually, or $39 month to month ($468 a year).
- 03Envato Plus, with 200 AI credits a month, costs $39 a month billed annually ($468 a year); Canva Business costs US$250 a year per person.
- 04Envato offers students 30% off Core; Canva says eligible nonprofits and K-12 schools get most premium features free.
What Envato still got right
Envato's price covers unlimited downloads of video templates, music and fonts that would otherwise need separate subscriptions, so for a video editor it can replace several purchases.
Round 4 / AI Tools
Round 4: AI credits and allowances
- 01Envato includes 20 AI credits a month on Core, 200 on Plus and 500 to 2,000 on Ultimate, across image, video, voice, music, sound, graphics and mockups.
- 02Envato lists third-party models including GPT Image 2, Flux 3, Nano Banana 2, Seedance 2.0 and ElevenLabs on Plus and Ultimate.
- 03Canva's FAQ gives Pro up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra AI uses a month and Business up to 400 Premium or 40 Ultra, with Standard tools such as translation outside the allowance.
- 04Both sell more AI capacity: Envato through higher plans, Canva through its AI Pass add-on and, on Business, AI top-ups.
What the other tool still got right
It depends on the output: Envato's credits cover AI video, voiceovers, music and sound effects for editors, while Canva's AI works inside the designs you're already making.
Round 5 / Teams & Licensing
Round 5: Team plans and commercial use
- 01Envato Teams Core costs $29 a month billed annually for 2 members ($348 a year, $174 per person), for teams of 2 to 5.
- 02Canva Business costs US$250 a year per person and adds brand kits, approvals and team admin tools; Pro can't be shared ("Only one person can use a Canva Pro account").
- 03Envato licenses each download for one project, including client work and monetized content; completed projects stay covered after you cancel.
- 04Envato's license doesn't allow music in broadcasts (TV, radio, IPTV or streaming radio) on Individual and Teams plans; its Enterprise plan offers custom licensing.
What the other tool still got right
It depends on the team: Envato costs less per person for shared asset access, while Canva Business is built around brand control and approvals.

Limitations of each tool
Where Envato falls short
- Each download is licensed for one project; reusing an item means registering a new license, and items must be licensed while you're subscribed.
- Music can't be used in broadcasts, including IPTV and streaming radio, on Individual and Teams plans, or in a theatrically released film.
- Envato doesn't refund cancelled subscriptions, and month-to-month Core ($39) costs more than twice the annual rate ($16.50 a month).
- Item support comes from each item's author rather than Envato, and the subscription doesn't include Envato Market items.
Where Canva falls short
- Pro is for one person only, so any team sharing brand kits and folders needs Business at US$250 per person a year.
- Premium and Ultra AI tools share a monthly allowance (up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses on Pro), with paid add-ons for more.
- Assets are used inside Canva's editor, so it doesn't supply video templates or fonts for Premiere Pro, After Effects or Resolve.
- SSO and SCIM require an Enterprise contract.

The Verdict
Overall winner: Tie
There's no single winner, because these are different products that overlap on templates. Canva is the better choice when you need to make the design itself and nobody on the team works in professional software: its editor covers 1,000+ design types, the Free plan is usable, Pro costs US$144 a year for one person, and Business adds brand kits and approvals at US$250 per person. Envato is the better choice for video editors, motion designers and designers who already work in Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or Photoshop: Core's $198 a year billed annually covers unlimited downloads of templates, footage, music, sound effects, fonts and 3D, with AI generation on monthly credits. Read Envato's license before you buy: each download is registered to one project, music isn't licensed for broadcast on Individual and Teams plans, and cancelled subscriptions aren't refunded, though completed projects stay covered. Teams that make social content in Canva and longer video in an editor often keep both, and Envato sells templates made for Canva. Disclosure: Carlos Gil has a paid partnership with Canva Enterprise; Canva didn't review this page, and the partnership plays no part in the round results.
If you only have $20
Canva Free if you design in the browser; Envato Core billed annually ($198 a year) if you need assets for editing software.
If money's not the issue
Envato Plus or Ultimate for heavy AI video and audio generation; Canva Business for brand-controlled team design.
