Should you pay for Descript?
Descript is for people whose content is mostly talking: podcasts, interviews, YouTube explainers and course lessons. You edit by editing the transcript, so cutting a tangent means deleting a paragraph rather than hunting through a timeline. The buying decision comes down to two monthly allowances rather than features: media hours (10 on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator, 40 on Business) and AI credits (400, 800 and 1,500), which pay for Studio Sound, Eye Contact, Green Screen, Underlord and AI speech. If you publish a weekly long-form show and lean on those AI tools, size the plan to your credits. If you mostly need text-based cutting, Hobbyist is the floor; Free exports at 720p with a watermark.

The Verdict
Descript makes the most sense when the words carry the video. Transcript-based editing (delete a sentence in the text and the audio and video go with it) suits podcasts, interviews, YouTube explainers and course lessons far better than cinematic work. Around that core sit AI tools such as Studio Sound for audio cleanup, Eye Contact, Green Screen, Remove Filler Words, AI speech with custom voice clones, and Underlord, Descript's AI co-editor. All of them draw from a monthly AI-credit allowance, so heavy AI users should size the plan to credits rather than features. It isn't a finishing tool for color-graded or effects-heavy video.

What Is Descript?
Descript is a video and audio editor founded in 2017 by Andrew Mason and based in San Francisco. Its core idea is that speech-heavy media is easier to edit as text: Descript transcribes your recording, and deleting or moving words in the transcript edits the underlying audio and video. Around that, the 2026 product adds a multitrack timeline, AI tools (Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Eye Contact, Green Screen, Create Clips), AI Speech with custom voice clones for fixing lines, Underlord as an AI co-editor, AI video generation on Creator and above, and translation and dubbing on Business. Descript's pricing page says more than 6 million creators and teams use it. Some people use it as their main editor for podcasts, YouTube, courses and internal video; others use it to finish recordings captured in Riverside, Zoom or on a phone.

Descript Features: What You Actually Get
Transcript-based editing
The core feature: Descript transcribes your video or audio, then lets you edit the transcript like a document. Delete a sentence in the text and the video goes with it. Cut filler words, restructure interviews and remove tangents without touching a timeline.
Trim a 90-minute interview by deleting filler words, removing off-topic tangents and reordering questions, all in the transcript.
Studio Sound (AI audio cleanup)
One-click AI cleanup for voice recordings that reduces background noise and evens out levels. On paid plans it draws from your monthly AI credits; on Free it's limited.
Clean up a remote guest's laptop-microphone audio before publishing the episode.
AI Speech with custom voice clones
Fix a line by typing the corrected words and regenerating them in a custom clone of your voice. Descript's pricing page lists AI Speech with custom voice clones and video regenerate from Hobbyist up; the feature used to be marketed as Overdub. Regenerating speech uses AI credits.
Notice you mispronounced a guest's name 30 minutes into a podcast — type the correction, Descript regenerates it in your voice, no re-record session needed.
Eye Contact and Remove Filler Words
Eye Contact adjusts your gaze so you appear to look at the camera while reading from a script. Remove Filler Words and silence trimming clean up delivery from the transcript. Both are AI tools that draw from your monthly AI credits.
Read a YouTube intro from a teleprompter on a second monitor, then enable Eye Contact in post so the final video appears to look into the lens.
Multi-track video editor + AI Effects
Beyond transcript editing, Descript has a multitrack timeline with layers, transitions, captions, Green Screen background removal and, on Creator and above, unlimited access to a royalty-free stock library. Transcription covers 25 languages. Timeline export to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro requires Creator or higher.

This is an editorial review, not a documented hands-on test. On October 8, 2026 we checked Descript's pricing page with both monthly and annual billing selected (prices, media hours, AI credits, export limits and plan features) and Descript's help center (YouTube publishing, timeline exports, Zoom import and the Integrations section). Pricing scenarios are calculations from per-person list prices. We haven't run transcription-accuracy or speed tests, so this page makes no accuracy or time-saving claims. Riverside's price comes from our Riverside review (checked October 7, 2026); other competitor prices were not re-checked, so we link to the vendor instead.
Our editorial evaluation considers product information, official documentation, pricing, features and professional experience. It is not a claim of documented hands-on testing.
