Quick answer
What is ProWritingAid, and is it worth paying for?
ProWritingAid is a grammar, style and editing tool: it flags errors as you write in Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, a browser or its own editor, and runs 25-plus reports on things like overused words, sentence length, pacing, repeats, readability and dialogue. Premium adds unlimited length and full reports; AI features such as Sparks rewrites and Chapter Critiques are rationed per day by plan, and Manuscript Analysis costs extra in Story Credits. It's worth paying for if you edit long manuscripts or reports and want to understand patterns in your writing. It's less useful if you mainly need quick corrections everywhere you type or non-English support. On October 14, 2026, Premium cost $10 a month billed yearly ($120), $30 month to month or $399 lifetime.
- Best for
- Fiction and non-fiction authors, bloggers and students editing long documents in English.
- Skip it if
- You need languages other than English, mobile apps, or quick corrections in every app with little setup.
- Strongest capability
- Depth of analysis: 25-plus reports on style, pacing, repetition and readability, plus comparisons with published fiction.
- Biggest limitation
- English only, daily caps on AI features, and Manuscript Analysis billed separately at $25 to $50 per run.
- Current cost
- Free; Premium $10/mo billed yearly, $30 monthly or $399 lifetime; Premium Pro $12, $36 or $699.
The Verdict
ProWritingAid's strength is depth. Beyond grammar and spelling, its reports flag sticky sentences, overused words, repeated phrases, sentence-length variety, pacing, dialogue tags and readability, and fiction writers can compare their style with published authors. It works inside Word, Google Docs, Scrivener and browsers, and its desktop app reaches other writing apps on Mac and Windows. Its privacy statements are clear: it says it never uses your writing to train AI. The limits are worth knowing. It's English only, the free plan checks 500 words at a time, AI tools such as Sparks are capped per day (5 on Premium), Manuscript Analysis costs a Story Credit per run ($35 on Premium), and refunds are limited to three days on yearly and lifetime plans. Monthly billing at $30 is three times the yearly rate. We score ProWritingAid 8.4/10.
Best for
Writers of long-form English text who want to see and fix patterns in their style, not just individual errors.

The Background
What Is ProWritingAid?
ProWritingAid is a writing assistant made by Orpheus Technology, founded in London in 2013 by Chris Banks; the company says it is self-funded. It checks grammar, spelling and style in real time and runs on-demand reports across a whole document. Integrations cover Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, Apple Pages and Notes, Notion, Atticus, Milanote and Chrome, Firefox and Edge, plus a Web Editor and a Desktop Everywhere app that works across other Mac and Windows apps. AI features include Rephrase, Sparks rewriting, Creative Nudges, Story Canvas and Chapter Critique, and Manuscript Analysis gives developmental-editor-style feedback on whole books for a separate fee. It supports English only, in US, UK, Canadian and Australian variants.
The Product
ProWritingAid Features: What You Actually Get
Real-time checks and 25-plus reports
ProWritingAid's features page lists 25-plus reports, including Grammar, Style, Sticky Sentences, Readability, Overused Words, Repeats, Sentence Length, Pacing, Dialogue, Clichés, Sensory and Consistency. Premium adds a custom style guide, custom dictionary and comparisons with 90 fiction authors. The free plan limits each line-editing report to two runs a day.
A novelist runs the Pacing and Repeats reports on each chapter to find slow passages and repeated phrases before sending to an editor.
AI rewriting and critique
Rephrase rewrites one sentence at a time (10 a day free, unlimited on Premium). Sparks Edit and Inspire work on up to 2,500 characters, capped at 3 uses a day on Free, 5 on Premium and 50 on Premium Pro; Creative Nudges and Chapter Critiques have their own daily caps. ProWritingAid says some features use large language models from providers it doesn't name, that AI features can be turned off, and that it never uses your writing to train AI.
A blogger uses Rephrase to tighten a long introduction, then accepts or rejects each suggestion.
Manuscript Analysis and Story Credits
Manuscript Analysis reviews a whole manuscript of up to 300,000 words as a developmental editor would, and the same Story Credit can run Plot Analysis, Virtual Beta Reader or Marketability Analysis. A credit costs $50 on a free account, $35 on Premium and $25 on Premium Pro, with discounts in packs of 3 and 10. Credits don't expire and aren't refundable.
A first-time author buys one credit on Premium for a structural read of a finished draft before hiring a human editor.
Integrations and desktop app
Add-ins and extensions cover Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, Apple Pages, Apple Notes, Notion, Atticus and Milanote, and Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Desktop Everywhere, for macOS 10.15 or later and Windows 10 (1903) or later, works across other writing apps such as Vellum and Obsidian (partly). ProWritingAid's help center says there are no integrations for Linux, Android or iOS, Google Docs Pageless mode isn't supported, and an internet connection is required.
A Scrivener user checks each scene without exporting, then runs full reports in the Web Editor.

Yearly billing is the way to buy ProWritingAid: Premium is $120 a year against $360 if you pay $30 month to month. The $399 lifetime price equals a little over three years of yearly Premium. Premium Pro costs only $2 a month more on yearly billing and mostly adds AI allowance and workshops, so it suits writers who use Sparks or Chapter Critique heavily. Manuscript Analysis is never included; budget $35 per run on Premium. ProWritingAid's guarantee gives a refund only within three days of buying a yearly or lifetime plan, once per customer, and monthly plans, plagiarism checks and Story Credits aren't refundable. Subscriptions renew automatically on the purchase date unless you turn renewal off. K-12 schools get Premium free and university students 25% off.

Manuscript Analysis: the help center says new accounts get one trial credit and recommends at least 6,000 words; the feature page doesn't mention a trial credit and recommends at least 4,000 words.
Data storage: the business page says ProWritingAid doesn't store your writing on its servers, while the help center says documents saved in the Web Editor are stored encrypted. An older GDPR page says data is held in the USA; the business page offers EU or US hosting on Azure.
