    Quick answer

What is Ahrefs, and is it worth paying for?

Ahrefs is an SEO platform: Site Explorer shows any site's backlinks and organic keywords, Keywords Explorer finds topics and difficulty, Site Audit crawls your site for technical issues, Rank Tracker follows positions weekly, and Brand Radar tracks how brands appear in AI answers. It's worth paying for if link and competitor research drives your SEO work. It's expensive for one-person teams once you add users or add-ons, and there's no free trial. On October 14, 2026 Ahrefs Free covered sites you've verified you own, Starter cost $29 a month (monthly only), Lite $129, Standard $249, Advanced $449 and Enterprise $1,499 a month with an annual commitment. Annual billing on Lite to Advanced saves about 17%.

    Best for
SEO specialists and agencies doing backlink, competitor and keyword research every week.
    Skip it if
You need daily rank tracking, a free trial, many seats at a low price, or only on-page content optimization.
    Strongest capability
Backlink and organic-keyword data from Ahrefs's own crawler, with API and MCP access from Lite.
    Biggest limitation
Every plan includes one user; extra seats cost $40 to $100 a month each and AI visibility is a paid add-on.
    Current cost
Free for verified sites; $29 Starter; $129 to $449 a month for Lite to Advanced; $1,499 Enterprise.

    The Verdict

Ahrefs remains one of the two standard toolsets for serious SEO research. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker sit on an index Ahrefs describes as tens of trillions of backlink records, and Lite and above add an API, an MCP server for AI assistants and Brand Radar AI-visibility prompts. The cost structure is the catch. Each plan includes a single user, extra seats run $40 to $100 a month, Lite caps you at 1,000 credits a month, rank tracking updates weekly on every plan, and Brand Radar's full AI indexes, Content Kit and Report Builder are add-ons from $99 to $199 a month. There's no free trial, and its terms say Ahrefs has no obligation to refund. Ahrefs Free is a genuinely useful audit tool for sites you own. We score Ahrefs 8.3/10.

    The Background

    What Is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is a Singapore-headquartered SEO software company that runs its own web crawler; its about page lists 149 teammates. The platform bundles Site Explorer (backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords and top pages for any site), Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker, Content Explorer, Web Analytics, Report Builder and Brand Radar, which tracks brand mentions in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity. Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, gives site audits and limited backlink and keyword data for sites you verify. Paid plans are priced per plan with one user included, and usage beyond plan limits can be billed pay-as-you-go once you enable it.

    The Product

Ahrefs Features: What You Actually Get

    Site Explorer and backlink research

Site Explorer shows a domain's backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, top pages and paid keywords, with history that grows by plan: 1 month on Starter, 6 months on Lite, 2 years on Standard and 5 years on Advanced. Ahrefs's big-data page claims 35 trillion external backlink history records and 494 billion pages in its index; those are its own figures. Reports show 250 rows on Starter, 2,500 on Lite and 30,000 on Standard.

An agency audits a prospect's link profile and compares it with three competitors before a pitch.

    Keywords Explorer and Content Explorer

Keywords Explorer covers what Ahrefs calls 29 billion filtered keywords across 217 locations, with difficulty, volume, SERP history and parent topics; keyword clusters and AI suggestions start on Standard. Content Explorer, which finds top-performing pages on a topic, also starts on Standard. Ahrefs Free doesn't include Keywords Explorer.

A content lead builds a quarter's article plan from keyword clusters and competitors' top pages.

Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Ahrefs Free

Site Audit crawls for 170-plus technical issues; Lite includes 100,000 crawl credits a month and up to 25,000 pages per project. Rank Tracker updates weekly on every plan, with 750 tracked keywords on Lite, 2,000 on Standard and 5,000 on Advanced. Ahrefs Free gives verified sites Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits per project a month), Web Analytics and up to 1,000 visible backlinks and keywords.

A small business owner verifies its site on Ahrefs Free and fixes broken links and redirect chains without paying.

    Brand Radar, API and MCP

Brand Radar tracks how often a brand is mentioned or cited in AI answers. Lite includes 5 custom prompts (150 checks a month), Standard 10 and Advanced 20; the full AI indexes are an add-on from $199 a month, and extra prompt packs cost $50 to $250 a month with per-check overage. Lite and above include API and MCP server access, capped at 100 rows per request on Lite, 250 on Standard and 500 on Advanced, so assistants such as Claude can query Ahrefs data.

A SaaS marketer tracks whether ChatGPT and Perplexity cite the brand for its five money keywords each month.

    The Numbers

    Ahrefs Pricing: Every Plan Explained

These are the prices on Ahrefs's pricing page on October 14, 2026, in US dollars. The page shows monthly prices and says annual billing saves up to 17%; the annual totals below come from the plan data on the same page.

    PlanMonthlyAnnualIncluded FeaturesBest For
Ahrefs Free$0$0Verified sites only: Site Audit, Web Analytics, up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords visible per site; no Keywords ExplorerSite owners auditing their own site
Starter$29/moMonthly only200 credits a month, 1 month of history, 250 rows per report, no exports, 50 tracked keywords, 1 user (no extra seats)Occasional keyword and competitor checks
Lite$129/mo$1,290/yr (about $107.50/mo)1 user (up to 2 more at $40/mo), 1,000 credits per user a month, 5 unverified projects, 6 months of history, 750 tracked keywords weekly, API and MCP, Brand Radar 5 promptsSolo SEOs and small businesses
StandardBest value$249/mo$2,490/yr (about $207.50/mo)1 user (up to 5 more at $60/mo), unlimited credits, 2 years of history, 2,000 tracked keywords, Content Explorer, Portfolios, keyword clustersIn-house SEO teams and freelancers with several clients
Advanced$449/mo$4,490/yr (about $374/mo)1 user (up to 10 more at $80/mo), 5 years of history, 5,000 tracked keywords, Looker Studio integrationAgencies and larger content teams
Enterprise$1,499/moAnnual commitment requiredFrom 3 users ($100/mo per extra user), unlimited history, uncapped API, SSO, audit log, no training on your dataLarge organizations with security requirements

The headline price is per plan, not per team. A three-person in-house team on Standard pays $249 plus two seats at $60, or $369 a month. Lite's 1,000 credits per user a month can run out on busy research days, and once pay-as-you-go is enabled Ahrefs charges overage automatically; its terms say unused credits expire. Add-ons are where costs grow: Brand Radar's full AI indexes from $199 a month, Content Kit from $99, Report Builder $99 and Project Boost $20 or $200 per project. Annual billing saves about 17% on Lite to Advanced (the help center says almost 20%), and switching to annual is done through support. Ahrefs says it offers no free trials and never runs discounts. Its pricing FAQ says it doesn't issue refunds in general but may refund an unused monthly plan; section 8.2 of its US terms says it has no obligation to refund in any instance.

    Read before you buy

    Where Ahrefs's own pages differ

Annual discount: the pricing page says annual billing saves up to 17%, while the page's meta description says 20% and a help-center article says almost 20%. The plan data on the pricing page works out to about 17%.

Refunds: the pricing FAQ allows a refund request on a monthly plan you haven't used, while the US terms (section 8.2) say Ahrefs has no obligation to provide refunds in any instance.

Scale claims: the about page cites 3 trillion external backlinks and 15 years of crawling, the big-data page 35 trillion external backlink history records and 16 years, and the pricing page '10+ years' of data. These measure different things, so compare them with care.

    The Audience

    Who Should Use Ahrefs?

Best for: SEO specialists and link builders

If backlink analysis, competitor gaps and keyword research are your daily work, Ahrefs's data depth is the reason to pay. Standard's unlimited credits and two years of history suit most full-time SEOs.

Best for: agencies with a few analysts

Advanced adds five years of history, 5,000 tracked keywords and Looker Studio reporting. Budget seats at $80 a month each and decide whether Report Builder or Brand Radar is worth adding.

Skip if: you want daily ranks or a trial

Teams that need daily rank updates, a trial, or a broader marketing suite should look at Semrush. Writers who only optimize their own drafts may get more from Surfer.

Index sizes are Ahrefs's own claims. Where Ahrefs's pages differ, we report both statements. No data-accuracy or speed results are claimed.

    How People Actually Use Ahrefs

    A small business owner

Start on Ahrefs Free to audit your own site and see your backlinks. Upgrade to Lite only if you need competitor and keyword research every month.

A freelance SEO with a few clients

Lite works for one person, but 1,000 credits a month can run short; Standard ($249, unlimited credits, Content Explorer) is the usual step up.

A content team tracking AI visibility

Lite and above include a handful of Brand Radar prompts. Price the $199-a-month AI index add-on or a prompt pack before promising stakeholders full AI-search reporting.

    The Ecosystem

    Ahrefs Integrations

Ahrefs connects mainly through its own API, MCP server and reporting integrations.

    • →Ahrefs API (from Lite; row limits per request by plan)
    • →MCP server for AI assistants such as Claude (from Lite)
    • →Ahrefs Connect API integration units (from Lite)
    • →Looker Studio (Advanced and Enterprise)
    • →Google Search Console and site verification for Ahrefs Free
    • →SEO Toolbar browser extension
    • →Report Builder (5 reports on Lite; $99/mo add-on for more)

Enterprise adds uncapped API access, custom endpoints, SSO and an audit log. There's no native CRM or CMS publishing integration; most teams export data or connect through the API.

Ahrefs is a top-tier research toolset for SEO professionals, and Ahrefs Free is a sensible starting point for any site owner.
