Quick answer
What is Ideogram, and is it worth paying for?
Ideogram is an AI image generator from a Toronto-based team that focuses on getting typography right, so headlines, labels and logos in generated images come out readable. You prompt it on the web or iOS, edit results in its Studio canvas, and can generate in bulk or through an API. It's worth paying for if you make text-heavy marketing images and need them private: Plus costs $15 a month billed yearly ($20 monthly) for 2,400 priority credits and private generation, checked on Ideogram's pricing page on October 14, 2026. The free plan gives 30 credits a week, but every free image is public, and Ideogram doesn't offer refunds.
- Best for
- Marketers and designers making posters, social posts, thumbnails, logos and ad concepts that need legible text in the image.
- Skip it if
- You need images kept private on a free plan, guaranteed commercial-use protection, refunds, or fast human support.
- Strongest capability
- Text rendering, backed by a model line that now includes Ideogram 4.5 for editing with references and open-weight Ideogram 4.0.
- Biggest limitation
- Terms and privacy: free images are public, prompts and uploads can be used for training, and the terms and privacy policy predate the current plans.
The Verdict
Ideogram is a strong pick when the words in an image matter. Its models are built to render readable text, Magic Prompt expands short prompts, and Studio adds layers, extend, remix, select-area edits and upscaling up to 8192 pixels on paid plans. Pro adds batch generation of up to 500 prompts, Team adds shared billing, and the API prices images from $0.03 each. It also ships quickly: custom models, background removal and an MCP server arrived in spring 2026, and Ideogram 4.0 was released with open weights in June. The weak spots are policy and support. Free images are public, credits on subscriptions expire monthly, the privacy policy says prompts and uploads train its models, refunds aren't offered, support is email and Discord, and its pages disagree on cancellation timing and commercial use. We score Ideogram 8.2/10.
Best for
Marketers and designers who need on-brand images with readable text, privately, at a modest monthly price.
Skip if
You need private free use, explicit commercial indemnity, refunds, or responsive human support.

The Background
What Is Ideogram?
Ideogram is an AI image generator whose team announced it on August 22, 2023 with a $16.5 million seed round led by a16z and Index Ventures; its terms list a Toronto address, and its pages name the company as Ideogram AI, Ideogram AI Inc and Ideogram, Inc. You write a prompt (optionally expanded by Magic Prompt), add up to 9 reference images, and choose an Ideogram model or a premium partner model; the newest is Ideogram 4.5, which Ideogram describes as its most precise edit model. Results can be edited in Studio, generated in bulk with Batch, used to train a custom model, or produced through a per-image API. Ideogram 4.0, a 9.3-billion-parameter model, was published with open weights on Hugging Face in June 2026.
The Product
Ideogram Features: What You Actually Get
Text rendering and Magic Prompt
Ideogram's models are built to place readable text in images, which is why it's used for posters, logos, packaging mockups and social graphics. Magic Prompt rewrites a short prompt into a detailed one. Ideogram's 4.0 post reports a 0.97 English OCR score on the X-Omni benchmark; that's the vendor's own measurement.
A café owner prompts a chalkboard-style poster reading "Pumpkin Spice Latte $5" and gets a version with the price spelled correctly.
References, styles and custom models
Up to 9 reference images (JPEG, PNG or WebP, 25 MB each) guide style, character or composition, and Ideogram 4.5 accepts up to 5 references for multi-turn edits. Since April 2026, Pro and Team can train limited custom models on their own images, and the API charges $40 per training run.
A brand designer trains a custom model on past campaign art so new social graphics keep the same illustration style.
Studio editing and upscaling
Studio, which absorbed the earlier Canvas, Magic Fill and Extend tools, offers layers, extend, remix, reframe, select-area edits, text layering and background removal. Extend, Remix, Select area and Upscale are paid-only, and upscaling goes to 2x, 4x or 8x, up to 8192 by 8192 pixels.
A marketer extends a square product shot into a 16:9 banner and removes the background for a landing page.
Batch generation
Pro, Team and Enterprise can upload up to 500 prompt rows and generate them in one run, which suits ad variants and product catalogs.
An ecommerce team generates 200 seasonal promo tiles from a spreadsheet of product names and taglines.
API, MCP and open weights
The API prices Ideogram 4.5 images at $0.03, $0.06 or $0.10 by quality, Ideogram 3.0 from $0.03 to $0.09, and tools such as Describe and background removal at $0.01, with 10 in-flight requests by default. An MCP server (May 2026) connects AI assistants, and Ideogram 4.0's weights can be downloaded from Hugging Face.
A developer generates thumbnail variants for each blog post through the API at a few cents an image.

The Numbers
Ideogram Pricing: Every Plan Explained
Ideogram sells monthly or yearly subscriptions with credits, plus a pay-per-image API. Prices below are from Ideogram's pricing page and plans documentation, checked October 14, 2026, in USD; yearly prices are shown as a monthly figure billed once a year.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Included Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 30 credits a week (accounts signed in with Google, Apple or Microsoft only), all images public, 1 generation at a time, Ideogram models; no editing tools that need priority credits | Trying the models |
| PlusBest value | $20/mo | $15/mo ($180/yr) | 2,400 priority credits a month, unlimited slow credits, private generation, 8 generations at a time, top-ups, Studio editing and upscaling | Regular private use |
| Pro | $60/mo | $42/mo ($504/yr) | 7,500 priority credits a month, batch generation (500 rows), Quality export, 32 generations at a time, limited custom model training | High-volume creators |
| Team | $30/user/mo | $20/user/mo | 3,600 credits per user a month, minimum 2 users, central billing and admin, collaboration, limited custom models | Design and marketing teams |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Private custom models, API volume discounts, priority support, post-paid billing | Large brands and platforms |
Plus at $180 a year sits between Midjourney's Basic ($96 a year) and ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month), and its main value over Free is privacy: free images are public and can be remixed by other users. Subscription credits expire at the end of each billing cycle (annual plans still get credits monthly), while top-up credits roll over, and edits, upscales, reference-image generations, custom models and partner models always use credits. Ideogram says it offers no discounts or free trials. Its refund page says Ideogram doesn't offer refunds for subscriptions, renewals, credit purchases or partial periods. The older Basic plan is closed to new subscribers. API fees are billed separately and are also non-refundable.

Where Ideogram's own pages differ
Cancellation and commercial use: the pricing FAQ says you can cancel at any time and won't be charged again, while the terms (last updated August 14, 2024) and docs say to cancel at least 5 days before renewal or you may be charged. The pricing FAQ says images can be used for any purpose, including commercial use; the docs FAQ says that depends on the terms, which disclaim liability for commercial use.
Privacy and plan details: the pricing FAQ says private generation and deletion are for Plus and Pro, while the pricing table and docs include Team and Enterprise. The pricing table calls the free allowance weekly slow credits; the docs call it 30 credits a week with no slow queue on Free. The terms and privacy policy (January 15, 2025) predate the current plans, open weights and partner models, and the company name varies across pages.

The Methodology
How We Reviewed Ideogram
This is an editorial review, not a documented hands-on test. We didn't use an Ideogram account for this review. It's based on Ideogram's pricing page, API pricing catalog, model pages, launch and Ideogram 4.0 posts, terms of service (August 14, 2024), privacy policy (January 15, 2025), and its documentation on plans, refunds, iOS subscriptions, models, creating, batch generation, upscaling, Studio, support and the FAQ, all checked on October 14, 2026. Where Ideogram's pages differ, we report both statements. No image-quality or text-accuracy results are claimed beyond Ideogram's own published benchmark.
Our editorial evaluation considers product information, official documentation, pricing, features and professional experience. It is not a claim of documented hands-on testing.

Midjourney: Midjourney's Basic plan is cheaper than Ideogram's Plus, but private (Stealth) mode needs Pro or Mega, and companies with over $1 million in gross revenue must buy one of those. Ideogram makes generation private from Plus.Read our Midjourney review →
ChatGPT: ChatGPT's free plan includes limited image creation and Plus costs the same as Ideogram's monthly Plus while adding a full assistant. Ideogram offers batch runs, Studio editing and a per-image API built for design work.Read our ChatGPT review →
Adobe Firefly: Adobe's plans page offers free daily generations without a plan, and Firefly Standard includes 2,000 generative credits a month, and Adobe positions Firefly on commercial safety. Pick it if indemnity and Creative Cloud workflows matter more than text rendering.
Use cases
Example setups by buyer type
A social media manager
Plus ($15 billed yearly) covers private generation of quote cards, event posters and thumbnails with readable headlines. Use top-up credits for busy months, since they roll over and subscription credits don't.
An ecommerce team
Pro ($42 billed yearly) adds batch generation from a spreadsheet of up to 500 prompts and custom models trained on your product style.
A developer building an app
Use the API instead of a subscription: Ideogram 4.5 images cost $0.03 to $0.10 each by quality, with 14 days' notice for material price changes.
The Ecosystem
Ideogram Integrations
Ideogram is mostly used in its own web and iOS apps, with an API and MCP server for automation.
- →Ideogram API (per-image pricing)
- →Ideogram MCP server for AI assistants
- →Partner models in the app, including Nano Banana and GPT Image (paid)
- →Ideogram 4.0 open weights on Hugging Face
- →iOS app with in-app subscriptions (Plus and Pro)
Ideogram doesn't document native plugins for design suites; images move out as downloads, through the API, or through an assistant connected to the MCP server. Team plans can only be bought on the web.
