Quick answer
What is Intercom, and is it worth paying for?
Intercom is customer service software: a shared inbox and ticketing system, a chat Messenger for your website and app, a help center, and Fin, an AI agent that answers customers from your help content and can run multi-step procedures. You pay twice: per human seat and per Fin outcome. On October 14, 2026 seats cost $29 a month billed annually on Essential ($39 monthly), $85 on Advanced and $132 on Expert, and Fin cost $0.99 per outcome. An outcome is mainly a resolution, counted when a customer confirms Fin's answer helped or doesn't ask for more help within 24 hours of Fin's last reply; escalations a customer asks for aren't billed. It's worth it if you handle enough volume for Fin to replace hours of agent work. Small teams watching every dollar may find Tidio or Help Scout cheaper.
- Best for
- Support teams with steady chat and email volume that want an AI agent to resolve routine questions inside a full help desk.
- Skip it if
- You have low volume and a tight budget, or can't predict how many conversations Fin would bill each month.
- Strongest capability
- Fin, an AI agent in 45-plus languages across chat, email, phone and messaging, billed only for outcomes.
- Biggest limitation
- Two meters (seats plus outcomes) make costs harder to forecast, and anonymized Fin conversations train its models unless you opt out.
- Current cost
- Seats $29, $85 or $132 a month billed annually; Fin $0.99 per outcome; Copilot $29 per agent billed annually.
The Verdict
Intercom has rebuilt itself around Fin, and the result is one of the most complete AI-first help desks available. Fin answers in 45-plus languages across chat, email, phone, WhatsApp and other channels, runs procedures that take actions in other systems, and is billed per outcome rather than per conversation, so failed answers and requested handoffs cost nothing. The help desk is strong too: Essential includes the Messenger, shared inbox, ticketing and a help center, and Advanced adds workflows, multiple inboxes and 20 free Lite seats. The weak spot is cost predictability. You pay for seats and for outcomes, add-ons such as Copilot and Proactive Support Plus cost extra, assumed resolutions are billed after 24 hours of customer silence, and Intercom's own pages disagree on the price of Fin with other help desks. Anonymized Fin conversations train Intercom's models unless you opt out. The company, renamed Fin in May 2026, became part of Salesforce in September. We score Intercom 8.6/10.

The Background
What Is Intercom?
Intercom is a customer service platform founded in 2011 and used by more than 30,000 companies, by its own count. In May 2026 the company renamed itself Fin, after its AI agent, while keeping Intercom as the name of the help desk, and on September 10, 2026 it announced that Salesforce had completed its acquisition (Salesforce had put the price at about $3.6 billion). US customers contract with Intercom, Inc. in San Francisco and most others with Intercom R&D Unlimited Company in Dublin. The product has four parts: the Messenger (chat on your site and in your app), the help desk (shared inbox, tickets, workflows and reporting), the help center, and Fin, an AI agent that uses retrieval from your content to answer customers and can run procedures such as refunds or order lookups. Copilot, an AI assistant for human agents, is an add-on. Fin can also be bought on its own for Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and other help desks.
The Product
Intercom Features: What You Actually Get
Fin AI agent
Fin answers customers from your help center, documents and data connectors in 45-plus languages, across chat, email, phone (Fin Voice, sold through sales), WhatsApp, SMS, Slack, Discord and social channels. Procedures let it follow multi-step policies and take actions through connectors to systems such as Shopify, Stripe and Salesforce. When it isn't confident it says so and hands off. Intercom claims a 76% average resolution rate; that's its own figure, not a measured result here.
A subscription app lets Fin answer billing questions and process plan downgrades through a Stripe procedure, escalating disputes to a human.
Help desk, inbox and ticketing
Essential includes the Messenger, a shared inbox, ticketing, pre-built reports and a public help center. Advanced adds multiple team inboxes, the Workflows automation builder, round-robin assignment, a private and multilingual help center and 20 free Lite seats for internal collaborators. Expert adds SSO and identity management, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help centers and 50 Lite seats.
A 15-person support team routes billing and technical tickets to separate inboxes with Workflows, while product managers follow along on free Lite seats.
Copilot and outbound messaging
Copilot drafts replies and answers agents' questions from your knowledge and past conversations; it costs $29 per agent a month billed annually or $35 monthly, and every agent gets 10 Copilot conversations free each month. Proactive Support Plus ($99 a month including 500 messages) adds outbound product tours, banners and campaign messages.
A new agent uses Copilot to find the documented answer to an unusual refund question without asking a teammate.
Integrations, API and MCP
Intercom lists 450-plus apps and integrations, a REST API, webhooks, data connectors that let Fin read and act in other systems, and an Intercom MCP server. Fin can also be deployed on top of other help desks, including a dedicated Fin for Zendesk product.
An ecommerce brand connects Shopify so Fin can check order status and start returns without an agent.

The Numbers
Intercom Pricing: Every Plan Explained
Intercom charges per human seat plus per Fin outcome. These are the prices on its pricing page on October 14, 2026, in US dollars per seat per month.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Included Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $39/seat/mo | $29/seat/mo billed annually | Fin, Messenger, shared inbox, ticketing, pre-built reports, public help center | Small support teams |
| AdvancedBest value | $99/seat/mo | $85/seat/mo billed annually | Everything in Essential plus multiple team inboxes, Workflows, round robin, private and multilingual help center, 20 free Lite seats | Growing support teams |
| Expert | $139/seat/mo | $132/seat/mo billed annually | Everything in Advanced plus SSO and identity management, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help center, 50 free Lite seats | Larger or regulated teams |
| Fin AI agent | $0.99 per outcome | $0.99 per outcome | Billed for resolutions and successful procedure handoffs; Fin for Sales qualifications $9.99; monthly limits available | Every plan |
| Fin with another help desk | $0.99 per outcome, 50-outcome monthly minimum | — | No seat or platform fees per fin.ai; works with Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Front, Gorgias and others | Teams keeping their current help desk |
| Add-ons | Copilot $35; Proactive Support Plus $99 | Copilot $29 | Copilot per agent; Proactive Support Plus includes 500 messages; Pro from $100/mo; SMS, WhatsApp and bulk email billed by usage | Teams adding agent AI or outbound messaging |
To budget Intercom, add two numbers: seats and Fin outcomes. Five agents on Advanced billed annually cost $425 a month; if Fin resolves 1,500 conversations a month, that adds $1,485, for about $1,910 a month before add-ons. Whether that's good value depends on how much agent time those 1,500 resolutions replace. Fin's bill is usage-based and charged in arrears, so set a monthly outcome limit and usage alerts, which Intercom supports. Self-serve plans need no contract and include a 14-day trial with no card. The terms renew annual plans for 12 months unless you give 30 days' written notice, allow renewal at the then-current list price, and make fees generally non-refundable. Early-stage startups with under $10 million in funding and fewer than 15 employees can get 93% off in year one, though the discount doesn't apply to extra Fin outcomes, phone, SMS or WhatsApp.
How Fin is billed
What counts as a $0.99 Fin outcome
In March 2026 Intercom changed Fin's billing unit from "resolution" to "outcome," with a resolution now one type of outcome. Each outcome costs $0.99, and at most one is charged per conversation.
A resolution is billed when, after Fin's last answer, the customer either confirms the answer helped (a confirmed resolution) or leaves without asking for more help. Intercom counts that assumed resolution after 24 hours with no reply. A procedure handoff is billed when Fin successfully completes a procedure you designed to end in a handoff to a person or workflow. Fin for Sales charges $9.99 for a qualified lead and $0.99 for a disqualification or self-serve routing.
Fin isn't billed when a customer asks for a human or shows frustration, when your escalation rules route the conversation, when a procedure fails, for greeting-only replies, clarifying questions the customer never answers, or spam and abandoned conversations. If a customer comes back to a conversation already counted as resolved, the charge is removed, even in a later billing period.
Fin is billed on your regular billing date for conversations that started in that period, and you can set reminders and a hard monthly limit. Bought on its own for another help desk, fin.ai lists $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum and no seat or platform fees, while a fin.ai help article describes a $49 monthly base plan that includes 50 resolutions. Confirm which applies before you sign.

AI training, ownership and where the data lives
Intercom uses anonymized conversations that Fin took part in to train and fine-tune its models. Admins can opt out under Settings > Workspace > Security > AI model training and fine-tuning, and contract customers can ask their account team; requests are processed within 30 days. Workspaces with a BAA, EU- or Australian-hosted workspaces, trials and some older negotiated contracts are excluded automatically. Intercom says its third-party AI providers are contractually barred from training on customer data.
Intercom's security page lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27018, 27701 and 42001 and HIPAA support, with hosting in the US, EU or Australia. After the September 2026 acquisition, Intercom is part of Salesforce; check your contract and data processing terms if that matters to you.

Where Intercom's own pages differ
Expert on monthly billing: the pricing page and plans article show Expert at $139 a month billed monthly, while the pricing FAQ says monthly billing is only available on Essential and Advanced.
Fin on other help desks: fin.ai's pricing page lists $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome minimum and no platform fees, while a fin.ai help article describes a $49 monthly base plan including 50 resolutions. The fin.ai pricing FAQ's list of supported help desks leaves out Zendesk, though Intercom sells a dedicated Fin for Zendesk product.
Smaller differences: fin.ai lists Copilot at $35 per user a month while intercom.com shows $29 billed annually or $35 monthly; one help article says Intercom works with over 200 apps while the integrations page says 450-plus.

The Audience
Who Should Use Intercom?
Best for: SaaS and app companies with in-product support
The Messenger sits inside your app, Fin answers most how-to and billing questions, and Workflows route the rest. Advanced fits most teams of five to 30 agents.
Best for: teams that want to keep their help desk
If you're on Zendesk or Salesforce, Fin can be bought on its own per outcome with a monthly minimum, so you can test AI resolution without migrating.
Skip if: you're a small store with light volume
A shop answering a few dozen chats a week will pay less with Tidio's packages or Help Scout's per-user plans, both of which offer AI answers at lower entry prices.

In The Wild
How People Actually Use Intercom
A 6-agent SaaS support team
Advanced billed annually costs $510 a month for seats. Turn on Fin with a monthly outcome limit for the first quarter, and review which conversations it resolves before raising the cap.
A team on Zendesk that wants AI
Fin for Zendesk avoids a migration. Ask Intercom which pricing applies (a 50-outcome minimum or a $49 base plan) and compare it with Zendesk's own AI agent allowance.
A healthcare startup
HIPAA support and SSO need Expert, and a signed BAA also excludes your data from Fin model training. Check whether the Early Stage program applies.
The Ecosystem
Intercom Integrations
Intercom lists 450-plus integrations and lets Fin act in other systems through data connectors.
- →Salesforce, HubSpot and other CRMs
- →Shopify and Stripe data connectors for Fin
- →Slack, WhatsApp, SMS, Discord, Facebook and Instagram channels
- →REST API, webhooks and data connectors
- →Intercom MCP server and custom MCP
- →Fin for Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Front and Gorgias
SMS, outbound WhatsApp and bulk email are billed by usage on top of seats; Intercom doesn't publish phone per-minute rates on the pages we checked. Live chat, support email and in-app messages are free and unlimited.
