Quick answer
What is Zendesk, and is it worth paying for?
Zendesk is a customer service platform: email ticketing, live chat and messaging, voice, a help center, routing, reporting and AI agents that answer customers before a human steps in. Support Team is ticketing only; the Suite plans add every channel and AI agents. On October 14, 2026 Support Team cost $19 per agent a month billed annually ($25 monthly), Suite Team $55 ($69) and Suite Professional $115 ($149), with Enterprise sold through sales. It's worth it for teams of roughly 10 or more agents that need routing, voice and admin depth. The catch is AI billing: Zendesk's pricing page still lists 5 to 10 included automated resolutions per agent and $1.50 to $2.00 per extra one, but its help center says that model was replaced on May 18, 2026 by a dollar allowance per seat and resolution tiers whose prices are quoted by sales.
- Best for
- Growing and large support teams that need ticketing, messaging, voice, routing and AI agents in one platform.
- Skip it if
- You're a small team that only needs website chat, or want AI pricing you can read on a public page.
- Strongest capability
- Mature multichannel ticketing and routing with 1,800-plus integrations and AI agents included in every Suite plan.
- Biggest limitation
- AI resolution prices under the new tier model aren't published, and Copilot, workforce tools and advanced data privacy are add-ons.
- Current cost
- Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 per agent a month billed annually; Enterprise by quote.
The Verdict
Zendesk remains the safe, deep choice for support operations. Suite Team bundles ticketing, messaging and live chat, voice, a help center, omnichannel routing and AI agents, and Suite Professional adds skills-based routing, IVR, HIPAA and data center location. After absorbing Forethought in March 2026, Zendesk folded its Essential and Advanced AI agent tiers into one offering with agentic reasoning and API actions on every plan, and it lists more than 1,800 apps and integrations. The downsides are cost and clarity. Copilot ($50 per agent billed annually, Professional and up), workforce management and the advanced data privacy add-on cost extra; enterprise prices are quoted; and AI billing is mid-change, with the pricing page still showing per-resolution prices that the help center says were replaced by a dollar allowance and quoted resolution tiers. Its contract makes fees non-refundable with no termination for convenience. We score Zendesk 8.4/10.

The Background
What Is Zendesk?
Zendesk is a San Francisco customer service software company founded in 2007, taken private in November 2022 by a group led by Hellman & Friedman and Permira, and the buyer of AI agent maker Forethought in March 2026. It says more than 80,000 companies choose it for AI service; that's its own figure. The product is sold in two families. Support plans cover email and web-form ticketing. Suite plans add messaging and live chat, voice, a help center, omnichannel routing and AI agents that resolve customer conversations by answering from your knowledge base and taking actions through Action Builder. Copilot, an AI assistant for agents, is an add-on from Suite Professional, as are workforce management, quality assurance and a contact center bundle. The Forethought AI agents are sold as an add-on that also works with other help desks.
The Product
Zendesk Features: What You Actually Get
Ticketing, routing and omnichannel support
Every plan includes ticketing, macros, triggers and reporting. Suite plans bring email, messaging, live chat, social messaging and voice into one workspace with omnichannel routing; Suite Professional adds skills-based routing, IVR, quick reports and data center location, and Enterprise adds intelligent triage, approval workflows, a sandbox and custom roles.
A 30-agent ecommerce support team routes messaging, chat and email to agents by language and skill, with phone calls in the same queue.
AI agents and automated resolutions
Every Suite and Support plan now includes Zendesk's single AI agent offering, with agentic reasoning, multi-step procedures and external API actions that used to be in the Advanced tier, after an update rolled out between May and June 2026. AI agents work in 80-plus languages, and Action Builder allows 40,000 actions a month on Team plans and 100,000 on Professional. Zendesk bills for resolutions it verifies, as explained below.
A travel company's AI agent answers baggage questions and looks up booking status through an API action before handing complex changes to agents.
Copilot and workforce add-ons
Copilot is Zendesk's AI assistant for human agents; it costs $50 per agent a month billed annually and is available from Suite Professional. The Workforce Engagement Bundle (workforce management and quality assurance) is $50 per agent billed annually, and a Contact Center add-on is $83. Suite Enterprise is now sold as "Suite Enterprise + Copilot."
A support manager adds Copilot for a 20-agent team and the QA tools to review AI and human conversations against the same scorecard.
Marketplace, API and data controls
Zendesk lists 1,800-plus apps, partners and integrations, API access on every plan and a High Volume API add-on. Suite Professional adds HIPAA support under a BAA and a choice of data center location; the Advanced Data Privacy and Protection add-on (access logs, bring-your-own-key encryption, retention policies, redaction) is for Enterprise plans at a quoted price.
A fintech on Enterprise adds the data privacy add-on to redact card numbers from tickets and set retention policies.

The Numbers
Zendesk Pricing: Every Plan Explained
Zendesk prices per agent per month. These are the prices on its pricing page on October 14, 2026, in US dollars. AI agent usage is billed separately; see the section on resolution billing below.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Included Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Support Team | $25/agent/mo | $19/agent/mo billed annually | Email and web-form ticketing, macros, triggers, reporting, AI agents; SSO; API | Small teams that only need email ticketing |
| Suite Team | $69/agent/mo | $55/agent/mo billed annually | Ticketing plus messaging, live chat, voice, help center, omnichannel routing, AI agents, knowledge base, Action Builder (40,000 actions a month) | Growing multichannel support teams |
| Suite ProfessionalBest value | $149/agent/mo | $115/agent/mo billed annually | Everything in Suite Team plus skills-based routing, IVR, Admin Copilot, App Builder, quick reports, data center location, HIPAA, 100,000 actions a month | Established support operations |
| Suite Enterprise + Copilot | Contact sales | Contact sales | Intelligent triage, auto assist, generative AI for voice, approval workflows, sandbox, custom roles, Copilot | Large and complex support organizations |
| Add-ons | From $50/agent/mo | Billed annually | Copilot $50 per agent (Suite Professional and up); Workforce Engagement Bundle $50; Contact Center $83; ADPP and Forethought AI agents by quote | Teams adding agent AI, WFM and QA |
| Free trial | $0 for 14 days | — | Suite Professional with Copilot; startup program offers longer free use (its pages say 6 months or up to 2 years) | Evaluating the Suite |
Seat prices are clear: a 10-agent team on Suite Team pays $550 a month billed annually, or $1,150 on Suite Professional. Monthly billing costs about 25% to 30% more. Add-ons change the total quickly: Copilot alone is another $50 per agent billed annually, and the add-on cards say "paid yearly" even when the page is switched to monthly. The harder number is AI. Under the model still shown on the pricing page, plans include 5 to 10 automated resolutions per agent a month, with extra resolutions at $1.50 each pre-committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Zendesk's help center says that since May 18, 2026 that's being replaced by a dollar allowance per agent seat ($2 a month on Suite Team and Support plans, $5 on Professional, $10 on Enterprise, up to $5,000 a year) spent on verified resolutions, with tier prices quoted by sales; existing customers get 30 days' notice before moving. Overage is allowed by default and billed monthly, or you can pause the AI agent at the limit. Contracts renew for the same term unless you give 30 days' notice, fees are non-cancelable and non-refundable, and there's no termination for convenience.
How AI is billed
Zendesk's automated resolutions and the 2026 change
Zendesk charges for AI agent conversations only when they end in a resolution it can verify. Under the resolution-tier model introduced on May 18, 2026, each AI conversation lands in one of three tiers: an assisted escalation (the AI helped but a person finished), a contained resolution (the customer didn't ask for more help, but an LLM check couldn't confirm the issue was solved) or a verified resolution (an LLM check confirms it was). Only verified resolutions are charged against your allowance.
A conversation counts as ended 72 hours after the first email on email, after 2 hours by default on messaging (adjustable up to 72) and on hang-up for voice. Each plan includes a dollar allowance per agent seat each month; light agents don't count. Zendesk's tier pricing article says its example prices are placeholders and to contact sales.
Customers not yet moved stay on the older model shown on the pricing page: 5 included automated resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional and 15 on Enterprise (capped at 10,000 a year), with extras at $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Ask your account team which model and prices apply before signing.

AI training and data handling
Zendesk's AI data use article says third-party generative AI features, such as those built on OpenAI models, aren't trained on Zendesk customer data. Its own non-generative machine-learning models are trained on sanitized data, with identifiers removed and personal details stripped.
Its data processing terms say customers can opt out of research and model training by contacting Zendesk support and naming their subdomains, and note that most customers instruct Zendesk to train. Zendesk Benchmark is on by default and can be turned off in the product. HIPAA requires Suite Professional or higher and a BAA, and after termination you have 30 days to export your data.

Where Zendesk's own pages differ
AI pricing: the pricing page's comparison table shows 5, 5 and 10 included resolutions per agent and $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, and its FAQ links to an article titled for the period "prior to resolution tiers." The help center says a per-seat dollar allowance replaced that model on May 18, 2026.
What's charged: the pricing FAQ says you pay for requests resolved by the AI agent without escalation, while the tiers article leaves contained resolutions, which also end without escalation, unbilled.
Startups and Copilot: the pricing page offers startups a 6-month trial for up to 50 agents, while the site navigation says startups can get up to 2 years free. The pricing page shows Copilot as a featured add-on without a plan restriction, while the help center limits it to Suite Professional and up.

The Audience
Who Should Use Zendesk?
Best for: multichannel support teams of 10 or more
Suite Team or Professional gives one queue for email, chat, messaging and phone with routing rules, a help center and AI agents, which is what growing support operations usually need.
Best for: regulated or complex organizations
Suite Professional adds HIPAA and data center location, and Enterprise adds sandboxes, custom roles and approval workflows, with a marketplace deep enough for most back-office systems.
Skip if: you're a small team or want simple AI pricing
A few agents handling website chat will be better served by Tidio or Help Scout, and teams that want an AI agent priced on a public page may prefer Intercom's $0.99 per outcome.

In The Wild
How People Actually Use Zendesk
A 12-agent ecommerce support team
Suite Team ($55 billed annually) brings chat, messaging, email and voice together with AI agents. Ask which AI billing model you'll be on and set the allowance to pause rather than overage while you measure results.
A 60-agent SaaS support operation
Suite Professional adds skills-based routing, IVR and HIPAA. Add Copilot and the Workforce Engagement Bundle only after modeling their $50-per-agent costs against handle-time goals.
A 3-person startup
Apply to the startup program for free use, or start with Support Team at $19 billed annually. If you mainly need website chat, compare Tidio and Help Scout first.
The Ecosystem
Zendesk Integrations
Zendesk lists 1,800-plus apps, partners and integrations, with API access on every plan.
- →1,800-plus apps, partners and integrations (Zendesk Marketplace)
- →Messaging and live chat channels on Suite plans
- →Voice on Suite plans; IVR from Suite Professional
- →Action Builder actions in external systems
- →REST API on every plan; High Volume API add-on
- →App Builder for custom apps (Suite Professional)
- →Third-party AI agents such as Fin for Zendesk and Tidio Lyro (sold by those vendors)
Action Builder lets AI agents and workflows act in other systems, with 40,000 actions a month on Team plans and 100,000 on Professional. The High Volume API add-on needs at least 10 seats.

The Final Word
Should You Use Zendesk?
Zendesk is a dependable, deep platform for support teams that have outgrown simple tools, and including AI agents with procedures in every plan is a real improvement. Its weak spots are cost transparency and contract flexibility: quoted AI tiers, add-ons that pile up and no early exit. Get your AI billing model and every add-on in writing before you sign. We score Zendesk 8.4/10.
