    Quick answer

Is NordVPN worth it, and what does it cost after the first year?

NordVPN encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through Nord's servers, hiding your IP address from the sites you visit and your traffic from your local network. It has no free VPN plan. On October 18, 2026, Basic cost $14.99 a month, or $65.88 for the first year and $139.08 a year after that. Every plan covers 10 devices and includes Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers, Meshnet and 24/7 live chat; the ad blocker and anti-malware start on Complete. Deloitte has run NordVPN's no-logs assurance since 2022, most recently in late 2025, but the full report is only available after signing in. A VPN is one layer of security, not anonymity, and it doesn't make a business compliant on its own.

    Best for
People who want specialty servers, Meshnet and identity-monitoring extras in one app, with live chat at any hour.
    Skip it if
You want a free plan, port forwarding without a paid add-on, split tunneling on Mac or iPhone, or a low renewal price.
    Strongest capability
A wide feature set on every plan: Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated servers, NordWhisper and free Meshnet.
    Biggest limitation
Renewals: Basic goes from $65.88 for the first year to $139.08 a year, the highest entry-plan renewal of the five VPNs we compare.
    Current cost
Basic $14.99/mo, $65.88 first year or $94.23 for 27 months (then $139.08/yr); Complete from $77.88; Prime from $113.88.

    The Verdict

NordVPN packs more into its apps than most VPNs: Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers, its own NordWhisper protocol for restrictive networks, free Meshnet for linking your own devices, and dark web monitoring even on Basic. Complete adds an ad blocker, anti-malware, a password manager and 1 TB of storage. Support is 24/7 live chat and email for every customer. The evidence is reasonable but less open than some rivals: NordVPN has had six independent no-logs reviews since 2018, two by PwC and four by Deloitte, and Cure53 assessed the apps and servers in 2025, but the full reports sit behind a Nord Account login. The trade-offs are cost and coverage. There's no free plan, Basic more than doubles at renewal, split tunneling is documented only on Windows, Android and Android TV, and port forwarding needs the paid Dedicated Server add-on. We score NordVPN 7.8/10, provisionally.

    Best for

People who want many privacy extras in one app, households with up to 10 devices, and anyone who values 24/7 chat support.

    The Background

    What Is NordVPN?

NordVPN is a virtual private network run by nordvpn S.A., a company registered in Panama and part of Nord Security, which also makes NordPass, NordLocker and the business product NordLayer. A VPN encrypts the traffic between your device and a NordVPN server, so your internet provider or the Wi-Fi operator can't see which sites you visit, and those sites see the server's IP address instead of yours. NordVPN's server page described thousands of servers across 225 locations on October 18, 2026. There are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and iPad, Android, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV, extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and setup guides for routers, consoles and other devices. What a VPN doesn't do matters as much. It doesn't make you anonymous: the sites you sign in to still know who you are, and browser fingerprinting and cookies still work. It doesn't stop phishing, malware you install yourself or weak passwords, although NordVPN's scam, phishing and anti-malware tools help on some plans. And it doesn't make a business compliant with GDPR, HIPAA or any other regulation; that depends on your own processes and contracts.

    The Product

NordVPN Features: What You Actually Get

    Specialty servers and NordWhisper

NordVPN lists three kinds of specialty server on its download page: Double VPN, which sends traffic through two servers; Onion Over VPN, for reaching the Onion network through the VPN; and obfuscated servers for networks that try to block VPN use. P2P servers are listed separately. Its protocols are NordLynx, NordWhisper (Nord's protocol for restrictive networks), OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec, which needs manual setup.

A traveller on a hotel network that blocks VPN traffic switches to an obfuscated server or NordWhisper, and uses Double VPN for sensitive work.

    Meshnet private networking

Meshnet links your own devices, and other people's, into a private encrypted network for file sharing, remote access and LAN gaming. NordVPN says it is free and open source, works with up to 10 of your own devices and 50 external ones, and can route a friend's traffic through your device as if it were a VPN server. It's the only part of the NordVPN app that works without a subscription.

A freelancer reaches files on a home PC from a laptop on the road without opening ports on the home router.

    Scam, malware and identity tools

Every plan includes scam and phishing protection and Dark Web Monitor for up to five email addresses. Complete adds what NordVPN calls a next-gen antivirus: anti-malware and browsing protection, an ad and tracker blocker, and email, call and message protection (message protection is Android-only for now). NordVPN says the full antivirus feature set is on desktop and mobile users get a limited set. Prime adds credit monitoring and identity-theft insurance for US residents.

A household on Complete turns on the ad and tracker blocker and download scanning on its Windows and Mac laptops.

Kill switch, split tunneling and dedicated IP

The kill switch differs by platform: an internet-wide and an app kill switch on Windows, "VPN bypass prevention" in the iOS and Mac App Store apps, a system-wide block on Android 8 and later, and a command-line switch on Linux; it isn't available on Fire TV Stick. Split tunneling is documented on Windows, Android and Android TV, with URL exclusions in the browser extensions. A dedicated IP is a paid add-on on every plan. Port forwarding works only with the separate Dedicated Server add-on, not on standard servers or a dedicated IP.

A remote worker buys the dedicated IP add-on so a client's firewall can allow one fixed address.

    NordVPN Pricing: Every Plan Explained

These are USD prices from nordvpn.com/pricing on October 18, 2026, read in a browser. Introductory prices apply to the first term only; NordVPN states the renewal price on each plan card and says renewal prices may be higher and can change. 2-year plans include 3 extra months. Sales tax may be added at checkout.

Pricing scenarios (our calculations from NordVPN's published USD prices, October 18, 2026; tax excluded). Basic month to month costs $179.88 a year. The 1-year plan costs $65.88 for the first year and renews at $139.08, so two years on it cost $204.96. The 2-year plan costs $94.23 for 27 months, the cheapest way to cover that period, and then renews at $139.08 a year, about $11.59 a month. That renewal is more than double the first-year price, and it's the highest entry-plan renewal among the five VPNs we compare: Surfshark Starter renews at $79, Proton VPN Plus at $83.88 and ExpressVPN Basic at $99.95. Complete costs $12 more than Basic in the first year but $80.40 more at each renewal. NordVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee covers new subscriptions only; once a subscription renews it isn't eligible, Apple App Store purchases follow Apple's policy, and retailer purchases go back to the retailer. NordVPN emails a reminder before charging longer subscriptions, so set a calendar note to re-shop or cancel before the first renewal.

    Privacy and transparency

No-logs policy, Deloitte assurance, Cure53 and Panama

NordVPN's privacy policy, last updated August 9, 2026, names nordvpn S.A. in Panama City as the company responsible for your data and says NordVPN follows a no-logs policy and does not track your online activity. Its no-logs page lists two reviews by PricewaterhouseCoopers AG Switzerland, in 2018 and 2020, and Deloitte engagements from 2022 onward.

The latest, announced on February 3, 2026, was a reasonable-assurance engagement by Deloitte Lithuania under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard. NordVPN says Deloitte interviewed staff and inspected server infrastructure, configurations and deployment processes, including standard, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN servers, between November 10 and December 12, 2025, and issued its report on December 12. NordVPN doesn't publish excerpts; customers can read the full report after signing in to their Nord Account. We read NordVPN's announcement, not the report itself.

Separately, NordVPN commissioned Cure53 to assess its apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, its Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions, account, VPN and Meshnet APIs and its VPN servers in May, June and October 2025. NordVPN's December 10, 2025 post says Cure53 found no critical vulnerabilities and that the high-severity findings were fixed and re-verified. An assessment or assurance engagement is a point-in-time check of the systems the firm was shown; it can't prove what happens every day in between.

Jurisdiction, as NordVPN states it: it is based in Panama, which it describes as a country with no data retention laws that would apply to VPN providers. NordVPN also accepts cryptocurrency, but signing up still creates a Nord Account.

    Beyond the VPN

Complete, Prime and NordLayer for teams

NordVPN sells one VPN in three bundles. Basic is the VPN with scam and phishing protection and basic dark web monitoring. Complete adds the security suite NordVPN calls a next-gen antivirus, plus a cross-platform password manager (NordPass) and 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage. Prime adds credit monitoring and identity-theft and cyber-extortion insurance through a third-party provider, for US residents only. Incogni, Nord Security's data-removal service, and a dedicated IP are add-ons on every plan.

NordVPN's consumer plans aren't built for teams: there's no admin console and NordVPN's pricing page sends business buyers to NordLayer, with a minimum of 5 licenses. NordLayer is a separate product: Lite at $8, Core at $11 and Premium at $14 per user a month billed yearly ($10, $14 and $18 monthly), with Core and Premium also requiring a $40-a-month server with a dedicated IP, and a 14-day money-back guarantee. It's a network-access platform rather than a shared consumer VPN.

Teams of two to four people that mostly need encrypted connections can look at Proton VPN for Business, which has a 2-user minimum. Teams that need a cloud firewall, device posture checks or site-to-site links should compare NordLayer's plans directly.

    Where NordVPN's pages differ

Audit count: NordVPN's no-logs page says "In all six cases, we passed the review" and, a few paragraphs later, that "All five independent assurance reports" found the policy valid, listing Deloitte only for 2022 to 2024. Its February 2026 post calls the 2025 Deloitte engagement the sixth.

Server network: the server page says "thousands" of servers across 225 locations, its search description says 7,400+ servers in 118 countries, and the free-trial page says 7,200+ servers covering 150 countries. All three were read on October 18, 2026.

Free trial: nordvpn.com/risk-free-vpn says the 7-day trial is for 1-year and 2-year Prime plans in 13 countries. NordVPN's support article lists 15 countries, adding Japan and Germany, and a wider set of plan names. Check the checkout page in your country.

    Scoring

    How the score is built

BestStacked weights five sub-scores: ease of use 20%, features 25%, pricing 20%, support 15% and integrations 20%. For NordVPN they come only from NordVPN's documentation, not from testing, and are provisional until the editor approves them. Ease of use 8.2: apps on every major desktop, mobile and TV platform plus setup guides for consoles and routers, but the kill switch works differently on each platform and isn't on Fire TV Stick. Features 8.5: Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, obfuscated servers, NordWhisper and free Meshnet, but split tunneling is limited to Windows, Android and Android TV, port forwarding needs a paid add-on and the ad blocker starts on Complete. Pricing 6.6: a 30-day refund and a cheap first term, offset by no free plan and a Basic renewal of $139.08 a year, more than double the first year. Support 7.8: 24/7 live chat and email for every customer and a detailed help center, but chat starts with an AI chatbot and there's no phone line. Integrations 7.8: the widest device list of the five, three browser extensions, Meshnet and the NordPass and storage bundle on Complete, but few third-party connections. That works out to 7.8 out of 10.

    The Audience

    Who Should Use NordVPN?

Best for: people who want many extras in one app

If you'd otherwise buy a VPN, a password manager, cloud storage and a breach monitor separately, Complete puts them in one subscription for 10 devices. Budget for the $219.48 renewal.

Best for: travellers on restrictive networks

Obfuscated servers and the NordWhisper protocol are built for networks that block VPNs, and 24/7 chat helps when you're in a different time zone.

Skip if: you want a free plan or a low renewal

NordVPN has no free VPN plan, and Basic renews at $139.08 a year. Proton VPN has a free plan and renews VPN Plus at $83.88; Surfshark Starter renews at $79.

    The Methodology

    How We Reviewed NordVPN

This is an editorial review, not a hands-on test. We didn't use NordVPN for this review and make no speed, streaming-unblocking or leak-test claims. It's based on NordVPN's own documentation, all checked on October 18, 2026: the nordvpn.com pricing page (read in a browser in USD, with the 1-month, 1-year and 2-year options and the offer terms), the download, features, servers, split tunneling, Meshnet, dedicated IP, next-gen antivirus, free trial and no-logs pages, the Deloitte and Cure53 announcements, the privacy policy, and support.nordvpn.com articles on renewal, refunds, the free trial, the kill switch, port forwarding and contacting support. NordLayer's prices come from nordlayer.com/pricing and competitor prices from each vendor's own pricing page the same day. No rival's comparison pages were used. Where NordVPN's pages differ, we report both. BestStacked has no affiliate relationship with NordVPN; the score doesn't depend on one.

Our editorial evaluation considers product information, official documentation, pricing, features and professional experience. It is not a claim of documented hands-on testing.

    In The Wild

    How People Actually Use NordVPN

A remote worker on public Wi-Fi

Basic at $65.88 for the first year covers a laptop and phone on café and airport networks, with the kill switch on. Budget $139.08 for each renewal, or re-shop before it.

    A family with many devices

Complete covers 10 devices with the ad and tracker blocker, a password manager and 1 TB of storage for $77.88 in the first year. If you have more than 10 devices, Surfshark has no device limit.

    A five-person consultancy

Sharing a consumer account isn't the answer. NordLayer Lite costs $8 per user a month billed yearly, about $480 a year for five people at list price; Proton VPN for Business starts at a 2-user minimum.

    The Ecosystem

    NordVPN Integrations

A VPN's integrations are mostly platforms and bundles. NordVPN runs on these, and connects to the rest of Nord Security's products through the Complete and Prime plans.

    The Final Word

    Should You Use NordVPN?

    7.8/10 Score

NordVPN suits people who want a VPN with many extras: specialty servers, NordWhisper for restrictive networks, free Meshnet, and on Complete an ad blocker, anti-malware, a password manager and storage, all with 24/7 chat. Its audit record is long, though the full reports aren't public. The cost is the catch. There's no free plan, and Basic renews at $139.08 a year after a $65.88 first year, so buy the 2-year plan if you'll keep it and decide before it renews. Look elsewhere if you want a free plan or open audit reports (Proton VPN), unlimited devices and a lower renewal (Surfshark), anonymous sign-up (Mullvad), or managed team access (NordLayer). We score NordVPN 7.8/10, provisionally.
