Quick answer
Is Surfshark worth it, and what does it cost after the first term?
Surfshark encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through its servers, hiding your IP address from the sites you visit and your traffic from your local network. It has no free plan, but every plan covers unlimited devices. On October 18, 2026, Starter cost $67.23 for the first 27 months, then $79 a year; the 1-year plan was on promotion at $44.85 for 15 months, also renewing at $79. Starter includes split tunneling, multi-hop, an ad blocker and rotating IPs; antivirus and breach alerts start on One. Surfshark says Deloitte verified its no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025, with the reports inside customer accounts. A VPN is one layer of security, not anonymity, and it doesn't make a business compliant on its own.
- Best for
- Households with more than 10 devices, and anyone who wants a full-featured VPN with a low renewal price.
- Skip it if
- You want a free plan, public audit reports, port forwarding, or the same monthly price on every Surfshark page.
- Strongest capability
- Unlimited simultaneous devices on every plan, with Bypasser split tunneling on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
- Biggest limitation
- Surfshark says it may A/B test the renewal prices it shows, and its pricing and renewal pages list different monthly prices.
- Current cost
- Starter $18.95/mo, $44.85 for 15 months (promo) or $67.23 for 27 months, then $79/yr; One renews at $99, One+ at $119.
The Verdict
Surfshark's main selling point is simple: there's no limit on how many devices you connect, on any plan. Starter is also more complete than most entry plans, with Bypasser split tunneling on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, Dynamic MultiHop, the CleanWeb ad and malware blocker, rotating IPs, obfuscated servers and Alternative ID masked emails. It renews at $79 a year, the lowest entry-plan renewal among the four VPNs we compare that discount the first term (Mullvad charges a flat €5 a month). The evidence is reasonable: Deloitte checked its no-logs policy in 2023 and 2025, Cure53 and SecuRing have assessed its infrastructure and apps, and Surfshark says all its servers run from RAM. The limits: no free plan, Deloitte reports only inside customer accounts, port forwarding isn't listed on its feature pages, refund exclusions for some payment routes, and Surfshark says the renewal prices it displays may be A/B tested. We score Surfshark 7.9/10, provisionally.
Best for
Households with many devices, budget-minded buyers who'll keep the VPN past year one, and anyone who wants split tunneling on iPhone or Mac.

The Background
What Is Surfshark?
Surfshark is a virtual private network run by Surfshark B.V., a company registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. A VPN encrypts the traffic between your device and a Surfshark server, so your internet provider or the Wi-Fi operator can't see which sites you visit, and those sites see the server's IP address instead of yours. Surfshark listed 4,500+ servers in 100 countries on October 18, 2026. There are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and iPad, Android, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV, extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and setup guides for routers, consoles, smart TVs, Apple Vision Pro and other devices. What a VPN doesn't do matters as much. It doesn't make you anonymous: the sites you sign in to still know who you are, and browser fingerprinting and cookies still work. It doesn't stop phishing, malware you install yourself or weak passwords, although CleanWeb blocks known malicious sites and One adds antivirus. And it doesn't make a business compliant with GDPR, HIPAA or any other regulation; that depends on your own processes and contracts.
The Product
Surfshark Features: What You Actually Get
Unlimited devices
Every Surfshark plan allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one subscription can cover a household's phones, laptops, tablets and TVs. The limit during the 7-day free trial is three devices. NordVPN, Proton VPN and ExpressVPN cap their entry plans at 10 devices and Mullvad at 5.
A family of five with two phones each, laptops and a smart TV covers everything on one Starter subscription.
Bypasser split tunneling
Bypasser sends chosen apps or websites outside the VPN. Surfshark documents it on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with website exclusions in the Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions. Reverse Bypasser, which sends only chosen traffic through the VPN, is on Android, and on Windows for apps only. It's included in Starter.
A remote worker keeps a banking app on their iPhone outside the VPN while everything else stays encrypted.
Dynamic MultiHop, obfuscation and NoBorders
Dynamic MultiHop routes traffic through two servers whose entry and exit points you choose. Obfuscated servers disguise VPN traffic, and NoBorders detects restrictive networks and suggests servers that work there. Surfshark's trust center lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 and Dausos, a protocol it built in-house, and says its servers run entirely from RAM.
A traveller on a network that blocks VPNs lets NoBorders pick a working server and turns on the kill switch.
CleanWeb, Rotating IP and Alternative ID
CleanWeb blocks ads, trackers and access to known malicious sites, and the Cookie pop-up Blocker rejects cookie banners in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Rotating IP changes your IP address every few minutes without dropping the connection. Alternative ID, also in Starter, generates masked email addresses and personal details for sign-ups you don't trust. Antivirus, breach alerts and scam protection start on One.
A shopper signs up for a store newsletter with an Alternative ID masked email so the real inbox stays private.

The Numbers
Surfshark Pricing: Every Plan Explained
These are USD prices from surfshark.com/pricing on October 18, 2026, read in a browser while a "Black Friday deal" banner was showing, plus renewal prices from surfshark.com/terms-of-service/pricing. Discounted prices apply to the first term only; 1- and 2-year plans include 3 extra months and both renew yearly. Surfshark says it may A/B test the renewal prices it displays. VAT or sales tax may be added.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Included Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StarterBest value | $18.95/mo | $44.85 for the first 15 months (promo), then $79/yr; or $67.23 for 27 months, then $79/yr | VPN on unlimited devices, Bypasser, Dynamic MultiHop, Rotating IP, ad and cookie pop-up blocker, Alternative ID | Most people who just want the VPN |
| One | $19.95/mo | $44.85 for the first 15 months (promo), then $99/yr; or $67.23 for 27 months, then $99/yr | Starter plus Antivirus, Alert breach monitoring, Search and scam protection (texts, email checker, web content blocker) | People who want antivirus and breach alerts bundled |
| One+ | $22.85/mo | $104.85 for the first 15 months, then $119/yr; or $107.73 for 27 months, then $119/yr | One plus Incogni data removal and up to $1M identity theft coverage (residency limits apply) | US, UK, EU, Swiss and Canadian buyers who want data removal |
| Surfshark for Teams | Quote only | From $5.90/user/mo on a 1-year plan | Starter, One or One+ for teams with an admin panel; 5-user minimum; price varies by user count | Small teams that want shared billing |
Pricing scenarios (our calculations from Surfshark's published USD prices, October 18, 2026; tax excluded). Starter month to month costs $227.40 a year. The 2-year plan costs $67.23 for 27 months and then $79 a year, so 39 months cost $146.23. The 1-year plan was on promotion at $44.85 for 15 months (it was $50.85 on October 15), then $79, so 27 months on it cost $123.85; the 2-year plan covers the same 27 months for $67.23. Each Starter renewal works out to about $6.58 a month, the lowest entry-plan renewal among the VPNs we compare that discount the first term (Proton VPN Plus $83.88, ExpressVPN Basic $99.95, NordVPN Basic $139.08; Mullvad charges a flat €5 a month). At the time of checking, One cost the same as Starter for the first term but renews at $99, $20 a year more. Surfshark's pricing page lists Starter at $18.95 a month, while its renewal-price page lists a 1-month renewal at $16.45, so check checkout before you pay monthly. The 30-day money-back guarantee covers the initial purchase only, one refund per service; recurring payments, prepaid and gift cards, purchases through most resellers, Alternative Number and anonymous dedicated IPs are excluded.
Privacy and transparency
No-logs policy, Deloitte reports, security audits and the Netherlands
Surfshark's privacy policy, last updated October 12, 2026, says it keeps its VPN service logs-free and doesn't store information that could show your online activities. Its trust center says Surfshark keeps no logs of IP addresses, browsing history, session information, bandwidth, connection timestamps or network traffic.
Surfshark says Deloitte has provided independent no-logs assurance twice. A January 2023 post describes a review of server configuration, deployment, VPN server configuration, infrastructure APIs, its software-defined network and staff interviews. A June 16, 2025 post describes an ISAE 3000 engagement covering standard, static and multiport servers. Both reports are available only to Surfshark customers inside their accounts. We read Surfshark's posts and trust center, not the reports.
For security, the trust center lists a 2026 Cure53 audit of Surfshark's infrastructure and its Dausos protocol, a 2025 SecuRing infrastructure audit (completed in December 2025, per the FAQ), a 2025 SecuRing assessment of its web, desktop and mobile apps and browser extensions, and Cure53 audits in 2021 and 2018, with report links. Surfshark also publishes quarterly transparency reports on data requests. Any audit is a point-in-time check; it can't prove what happens every day in between.
Jurisdiction, as Surfshark states it: it is based in the Netherlands, whose laws, it says, don't oblige it to log or retain user data, and it applies the GDPR to every customer. Being in the EU also means EU law applies to it.
Beyond the VPN
One, One+ and Surfshark for Teams
Surfshark sells the VPN in three bundles. Starter already includes Alternative ID. One adds Surfshark Antivirus (real-time protection, scheduled scans and webcam protection), Alert breach monitoring for emails, IDs and credit cards, the Search engine and newer scam-protection tools for texts and email. One+ adds Incogni, which asks data brokers to remove your details (US, UK, EU, Swiss and Canadian residents only), and identity theft coverage of up to $1M for US residents outside New York. Dedicated IP, in 20 locations, and Alternative Number are add-ons; a dedicated IP renews at $45 a year.
Surfshark for Teams gives businesses an admin panel to assign accounts. Its page lists Starter from $5.90, One from $6.90 and One+ from $9.40 per user a month on a 1-year plan, says prices vary by user count and requires at least 5 users. There's no self-serve checkout: you fill in a form and Surfshark sends an offer. It's a way to manage consumer VPN accounts centrally, not a network-access platform with a firewall or device posture checks.
Teams that need network access controls should compare NordLayer. Teams of two to four that want a managed VPN can look at Proton VPN for Business, which has a 2-user minimum.

Where Surfshark's pages differ
Monthly price: surfshark.com/pricing listed Starter at $18.95 a month and One at $19.95 on October 18, 2026, while the renewal-price page listed 1-month renewals at $16.45 for Starter and $18.95 for One.
Promotional pricing: the 1-year Starter plan cost $50.85 for 15 months on October 15 and $44.85 on October 18, while a "Black Friday deal" banner was showing. Surfshark also says the renewal prices it displays may be part of A/B price testing, so the price you see can differ from what's printed here.
Server count: the pricing page and trust center say 4,500+ servers in 100 countries; the teams page says 100+ countries.
Scoring
How the score is built
BestStacked weights five sub-scores: ease of use 20%, features 25%, pricing 20%, support 15% and integrations 20%. For Surfshark they come only from Surfshark's documentation, not from testing, and are provisional until the editor approves them. Ease of use 8.2: unlimited devices remove the device-juggling other VPNs need, apps cover every major platform and the plan matrix is simple, but the trial is capped at three devices. Features 8.3: Bypasser on four platforms including iOS, Dynamic MultiHop, CleanWeb, Rotating IP, NoBorders and Alternative ID in Starter, but port forwarding and Tor-over-VPN servers aren't listed on its feature pages, and antivirus starts on One. Pricing 7.6: a $79-a-year renewal, lower than Proton VPN Plus, ExpressVPN Basic or NordVPN Basic and a 30-day refund, offset by no free plan, a $18.95 monthly price, refund exclusions and A/B-tested renewal prices. Support 7.6: 24/7 live chat and email and a knowledge base, but we could check only Surfshark's own description of its support, and team plans need a sales form. Integrations 7.6: apps and guides for desktops, phones, TVs, consoles, routers and Apple Vision Pro, plus the Alternative ID and Incogni bundles, but few third-party connections. That works out to 7.9 out of 10.

The Methodology
How We Reviewed Surfshark
This is an editorial review, not a hands-on test. We didn't use Surfshark for this review and make no speed, streaming-unblocking or leak-test claims. It's based on Surfshark's own documentation on surfshark.com, all checked on October 18, 2026: the pricing page (read in a browser in USD, with the 1-month, 12-month and 24-month options and the plan comparison), the renewal-price and terms-of-service pages, the features and split-tunneling pages, the trust center, both Deloitte posts, the privacy policy, the free-trial, download and teams pages. Surfshark's separate help-center domain wasn't used. Competitor prices come from each vendor's own pricing page the same day. No rival's comparison pages were used. Where Surfshark's pages differ, we report both. BestStacked has no affiliate relationship with Surfshark; the score doesn't depend on one.
Our editorial evaluation considers product information, official documentation, pricing, features and professional experience. It is not a claim of documented hands-on testing.

In The Wild
How People Actually Use Surfshark
A household with many devices
Starter at $67.23 for 27 months covers every phone, laptop, tablet and TV in the house, with split tunneling on iPhone, Mac, Windows and Android. Budget $79 for each renewal.
A remote worker on public Wi-Fi
Starter with the kill switch and CleanWeb on covers a laptop and phone on café and airport networks; NoBorders helps where VPNs are blocked.
A five-person agency
Surfshark for Teams lists Starter from $5.90 per user a month on a 1-year plan, about $354 a year for five people before any user-count adjustment, with an admin panel. Ask for the quote in writing; teams that need network controls should compare NordLayer.
The Ecosystem
Surfshark Integrations
A VPN's integrations are mostly platforms and bundles. Surfshark runs on these, and connects to Surfshark's other products through One and One+.
- →Windows, macOS and Linux apps
- →iPhone, iPad and Android apps
- →Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, smart TVs and Chromebook
- →Chrome, Firefox and Edge browser extensions
- →Routers, Xbox, PlayStation, Meta Quest 2 and Apple Vision Pro through setup guides
- →Alternative ID masked emails (all plans) and Alternative Number (add-on)
- →Surfshark Antivirus, Alert and Search on One; Incogni on One+
Surfshark documents Bypasser and Reverse Bypasser per platform, and some features, such as GPS override, are on Android only. Check the feature page for your device before buying.

The Final Word
Should You Use Surfshark?
Surfshark suits people with many devices and anyone who wants a full-featured VPN that stays cheap after the first term. Starter covers unlimited devices with split tunneling on four platforms, multi-hop, CleanWeb and Alternative ID, and renews at $79 a year. Its audit record is reasonable, though the Deloitte reports are only visible to customers. Buy the 2-year plan if you'll keep it, and check the checkout price, because Surfshark's pages and promotions differ. Look elsewhere if you want a free plan or public audit reports (Proton VPN), Meshnet and specialty servers (NordVPN), anonymous sign-up (Mullvad), or business network controls (NordLayer). We score Surfshark 7.9/10, provisionally.
