    Quick answer

What is D-ID, and is it worth paying for?

D-ID is an AI video platform that animates a photo or recorded video of a person into a talking avatar, lets you build visual AI agents that hold live voice or chat conversations, and offers the same technology through an API. It's worth paying for if you want short avatar videos or an embeddable talking agent on a small budget and can live with tight monthly minute limits. Studio plans start at $4.70 a month billed annually ($5.90 monthly) for Lite, checked on D-ID's pricing page on October 13, 2026, but Lite gives 10 minutes a month, adds a D-ID watermark and is licensed for personal use only. Commercial use starts on Pro at $16 a month billed annually ($29 monthly) for 15 minutes, and payments are nonrefundable.

    Best for
Solo creators, educators and small marketing or support teams that need occasional talking-head clips, or developers adding a live avatar to an app or website.
    Skip it if
You produce long training libraries every month, need watermark-free output on a small plan, or want refundable billing.
    Strongest capability
Real-time visual agents: an avatar that answers spoken or typed questions from your own documents, can be embedded on a website, and runs on the same credit balance as video.
    Biggest limitation
Minutes are scarce and expire monthly: 10 on Lite, 15 on Pro and 100 on Advanced, every video is rounded up to the next 15 seconds, and Lite and the trial can't be used commercially.

    The Verdict

D-ID is one of the cheapest ways to get a talking avatar on screen, and its visual agents and API make it more of a developer platform than most avatar video tools. Lite costs $4.70 a month billed annually, but it buys 10 minutes of watermarked video a month for personal use only. Pro ($16 billed annually, $29 monthly) is the real entry point for business use: a commercial license, a generic AI watermark instead of the D-ID logo, premium voices, one voice clone and 15 minutes a month. Minutes don't roll over, each video is rounded up to the next 15 seconds, and the terms say payments are nonrefundable and auto-renewal must be cancelled 15 days before the period ends. D-ID's own pages also disagree about the trial, watermarks, voice cloning and how long your data is kept. We score D-ID 8.2/10.

    Best for

Creators and small teams that want low-cost avatar videos or a website avatar agent, and developers who want an avatar API with published prices.

    Skip if

You need many minutes of polished training video each month, team collaboration on a mid-tier plan, or refundable billing.

    The Background

    What Is D-ID?

D-ID is a generative AI video company best known for animating still photos into talking portraits. Its web app, D-ID Studio (still called Creative Reality Studio on some of D-ID's pages), turns a script or audio file into a video of a stock or personal avatar speaking it, and its Visual AI Agents are avatars that hold real-time conversations using a language model and documents you upload. It also sells Video Translate, Agentic Videos (videos with an AI agent viewers can question, launched April 23, 2026) and an API for videos and streaming avatars, plus a self-hosted option for enterprises. D-ID announced on September 16, 2025 that it had acquired simpleshow, a Berlin-based explainer video company, and its V4 Expressive avatar model launched March 16, 2026. D-ID says it serves 1,500 enterprise customers; that's its own figure.

    The Product

D-ID Features: What You Actually Get

Avatar videos from a photo or a short video

D-ID offers four avatar types. V2 photo avatars come from a single image and render at up to 1280x1280. V3 Instant Avatars come from a 1-2 minute video, output 1080p with body and hand movement, but can't be used for streaming or Agents. V3 Pro Avatars, for Pro plans and up, need a longer recording and are ready within 24 hours. V4 Expressive avatars add selectable sentiments (Friendly, Professional, Empathetic, Excited or Frustrated). Videos are capped at 5 minutes each.

A course creator records a two-minute webcam clip, creates a V3 Instant Avatar, and turns each lesson script into a short narrated video.

    Visual AI Agents

Agents are avatars that answer typed or spoken questions using a language model plus up to 5 knowledge documents (PDF, TXT, PPTX or web pages, up to 500,000 characters each). You can share an agent by link or embed it on a website, and conversations are charged to the owner's account. D-ID's help center says each agent reply consumes 0.5 credits per 15 seconds of speech, and an agent stops responding when credits run out.

A software company embeds an agent on its help page that answers setup questions from its product manuals in English and Spanish.

    Voices, cloning and languages

Standard Microsoft Azure voices are on every plan; ElevenLabs and PlayHT voices start on Pro, and Pro, Advanced and Enterprise can import voices cloned in ElevenLabs. Pro includes 1 voice clone and Advanced 3. D-ID's homepage claims 120+ languages and its FAQ page says 119. Cloning anyone's voice requires that person to record a consent statement.

A marketer on Pro clones their own voice once and reuses it across product explainer videos in several languages.

    API, streaming and self-hosting

Developers can generate videos and run real-time streaming avatars through D-ID's API on separate API plans, from Build ($14.40 a month billed annually, $18 monthly) up to Scale and Enterprise. Streaming costs half as much per credit as rendered video. Enterprises can also run real-time avatars inside their own cloud on an annual platform license plus per-minute streaming fees, quoted by sales without published prices.

An edtech app calls the streaming API so a tutor avatar answers each student's question in real time.

    Consent checks, moderation and marks

Creating a V3 avatar requires a live webcam consent recording with a random passcode, checked by transcription, face matching and voice verification. A third-party moderation tool screens images and scripts, and only Advanced and Enterprise customers with their own moderation can request to bypass it. Every video carries a mark: a full-screen watermark on the trial, the D-ID logo on Lite, a generic AI mark on Pro, and a custom logo option from Advanced.

An HR team creating a CEO avatar records the executive's consent on webcam before any footage is processed.

    D-ID Pricing: Every Plan Explained

D-ID sells Studio plans for its web app and separate API plans for developers, each with a monthly minute allowance. The prices below are from D-ID's Studio and API pricing pages, checked October 13, 2026, in USD; annual prices are shown as a monthly figure. Each paid plan has three credit levels (one credit equals 15 seconds of video); the figures below are the lowest level, with the higher levels noted.

Lite is cheap, but it isn't a business plan: the terms and help center limit it to non-commercial use, and every video carries the D-ID logo. Pro at $16 a month billed annually works out to about $1.07 per minute of video, Advanced to about $1.08, and Pro billed monthly to about $1.93 (our arithmetic from D-ID's listed prices). Because each video is rounded up to the next 15 seconds and unused minutes expire every month, a team making a few one-minute clips a week will want Pro's 25- or 60-minute level. Agents and Video Translate draw from the same balance. D-ID's terms (last updated July 2024) say subscriptions renew automatically, payments are irrevocable and nonrefundable, and you must cancel 15 days before the end of the billing period to avoid the next charge. Upgrades take effect immediately, downgrades at renewal, and annual subscribers can only upgrade to a higher annual plan. The pricing page also promises unlimited videos in your first month on paid plans, subject to a fair-use policy it references but doesn't link.

D-ID's terms make you responsible for having the rights and consents for every photo, video, voice and script you upload, and ban content that impersonates another person or infringes privacy or publicity rights. Political content needs D-ID's approval and visible watermarks. V3 avatars require a live webcam consent statement that is checked against the avatar footage by face and voice, and voice cloning requires the speaker's own recorded consent.

D-ID's Biometric Privacy Policy (updated December 19, 2024) says face geometry and voiceprints are kept as long as needed to maintain your avatar or the maximum time the law allows, whichever comes first; consent can be withdrawn by emailing its data protection officer. Its privacy policy says API uploads not marked to persist are erased within 24 hours, or 72 hours for Agents.

Commercial use depends on the plan. D-ID's help center lists Trial, Lite and API Build as personal use only and Pro, Advanced, Enterprise, Launch and Scale as commercial. You keep ownership of your inputs and outputs under the terms, but you grant D-ID a perpetual, royalty-free license to use what you submit. None of this is legal advice.

    Where D-ID's own pages differ

Trial: the Studio pricing page gives the 14-day trial 3 minutes for videos, Agents, translation and API, while the help center's subscriptions article calls it '14 days of unlimited use', and the FAQ page says everyone gets 200 free Agent conversation sessions.

Watermarks: the terms of use say paying users' videos won't have watermarks (beyond a synthetic mark), but the pricing page puts a D-ID watermark on Lite and an AI watermark on Pro. The help center says Enterprise customers can replace or fully remove the watermark, while the FAQ page says Enterprise can customize it but not remove it.

Voice cloning: the FAQ page says voice cloning is offered only to Enterprise customers, while the same page, the pricing page and the help center give Pro 1 cloned voice and Advanced 3.

Cancelling and data: the pricing FAQ says you cancel any time under Billing, but the terms require cancelling 15 days before the billing period ends. The help center says your videos stay accessible after you unsubscribe; the pricing FAQ says free users' data is deleted after 6 months of inactivity, the privacy policy says 180 days of inactivity plus 14 days after an email, and the terms say uploaded data is deleted within 14 days of termination.

Other details: the homepage claims 120+ languages and the FAQ page 119. The FAQ page lists 1080p as the top resolution, while the V4 launch announcement says up to 4K. The Trust Center lists ISO 27001:2022 and the FAQ page ISO 27001:2013. The Studio pricing FAQ says API usage comes from the same balance as the web app, while the help center describes separate API plans with their own credits.

    The Tradeoffs

    D-ID Pros and Cons

    What we love

    • Low entry price: Lite from $4.70 a month billed annually
    • Real-time visual agents that answer from your own documents and embed on a website
    • Avatars from a single photo or a 1-2 minute video
    • Published API prices, with streaming at half the credit cost of video
    • Live webcam consent checks before personal avatars are created
    • ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 42001 and SOC 2 listed in the Trust Center

    What could be better

    • Lite and the trial are personal use only; commercial use starts on Pro
    • Small minute allowances that expire monthly, rounded up per 15 seconds
    • Every plan below Advanced shows a watermark or AI mark
    • Payments are nonrefundable; cancel 15 days before renewal
    • Videos capped at 5 minutes each
    • D-ID's pages disagree on the trial, watermarks, voice cloning and data retention

    The Audience

    Who Should Use D-ID?

Best for: creators testing avatar video cheaply

Solo creators and educators can start on Lite for personal or social clips and move to Pro once they publish commercially, without committing to a large plan.

Best for: teams that want a talking website agent

Support, sales and training teams can build an avatar agent from their documents and embed it on a site, with V4 avatars for more expressive delivery.

Skip if: you produce long training libraries

Teams making hours of training video a month with collaboration and SCORM needs will find more minutes and workflow features in Synthesia, HeyGen Business or Colossyan.

    In The Wild

    How People Actually Use D-ID

A solo creator posting to social

Lite ($4.70 billed annually) covers about 10 minutes a month of watermarked clips for personal channels. Move to Pro before running ads or client work, since Lite isn't licensed for commercial use.

A small business with a website help agent

Pro ($16 billed annually) gives a commercial license, premium voices and 15 minutes a month shared between videos and Agents. Agent replies use 0.5 credits per 15 seconds of speech, so choose the 25- or 60-minute level if the agent gets regular traffic.

A developer adding a live avatar to an app

API Launch (from $35 a month billed annually) is the first API plan with a commercial license, with 45 minutes of video or 90 minutes of streaming a month. Build is cheaper but personal use only and watermarked.

    The Ecosystem

    D-ID Integrations

D-ID's integrations directory lists add-ins and partner apps, mostly for presentations, e-learning and publishing.

    • →Microsoft PowerPoint (D-ID add-in)
    • →Canva (D-ID app)
    • →Articulate Rise and Storyline 360
    • →iSpring, Moodle, TalentLMS and ETU
    • →ElevenLabs Agents and ElevenLabs voice import (Pro and up)
    • →Tolstoy interactive video

    • →D-ID API for video and real-time streaming

The homepage also mentions Google Slides, which the integrations directory doesn't list. Many directory entries are publishing guides for social platforms rather than direct connectors. No Zapier or Make integration is listed on D-ID's integrations page.

    The Final Word

    Should You Use D-ID?

    8.2/10 Score

D-ID is a good fit for people who want avatar videos or a talking website agent without a big monthly bill, and for developers who want an avatar API with published prices. Treat Pro as the real starting plan if the videos are for business, budget for higher credit levels if you make more than a few minutes a month, and cancel well before renewal because payments aren't refundable. Teams building large training libraries will get more minutes and collaboration elsewhere. We score D-ID 8.2/10.

    Yes, if

You want short avatar videos or an embeddable conversational avatar at a low price, or you're building avatar features through an API.

    No, if

You need many minutes of watermark-free video a month, team collaboration on a mid-tier plan, or refundable billing.
