Quick answer
What is Google AI Studio, and is it free?
Google AI Studio is Google's free web workspace for developers: you try Gemini and Google's image, video, music and voice models in the browser, then create a Gemini API key to call them from your own code. Using AI Studio costs nothing in any supported region, and the Gemini API has a free tier for some models, such as Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite, with rate limits shown in your AI Studio dashboard. The newest models, including Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview, Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni Flash, are paid only. The biggest difference is data: Google's terms say free-tier prompts and responses may be used to improve Google's products and read by human reviewers, while paid-tier content isn't. Paid use is billed per token through prepaid credits, from $5.
- Best for
- Developers prototyping with Gemini, and teams that want an API key without a Google Cloud setup.
- Skip it if
- You want a consumer chat assistant (use the Gemini app), or you need to send confidential data without paying.
- Strongest capability
- Free browser access to Google's latest model families, from Gemini to Omni video and Nano Banana images, with one-click API keys.
- Biggest limitation
- Free-tier content can be used for training and human review, free rate limits aren't published as numbers, and two flagship prices double after launch periods.
- Current cost
- AI Studio free; Gemini API free tier on some models; paid per token, e.g. Gemini 3.8 Flash $0.75 in / $3.75 out per 1M tokens through 2026.
The Verdict
Google AI Studio is the easiest way to start building with Google's models: sign in, try a prompt, and create an API key in minutes, without opening Google Cloud. It covers Google's whole current lineup, including Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini Omni video, Veo, Nano Banana images, Lyria music, text-to-speech and the Live API, and its Build mode turns a prompt into a working app that eligible accounts can deploy. AI Studio itself is free, and the Gemini API's free tier is generous enough for prototypes. The trade-offs are real: Google's terms let it use free-tier prompts to improve its products and have humans read them, the most capable models are paid only, launch prices on Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini 3.8 Flash double later, and prepaid credits expire after 12 months. Support is mostly docs and forums. We score Google AI Studio 8.5/10.
Best for
Developers who want fast, free prototyping with Google's models and a direct path to a paid API key.
Skip if
You need a consumer assistant, enterprise governance from day one, or free use with confidential data.

The Background
What Is Google AI Studio?
Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com) is Google's web-based workspace for developers building with Google's generative models. You can test prompts against Gemini models and Google's media models (Gemini Omni and Veo for video, Nano Banana for images, Lyria for music, plus text-to-speech and the real-time Live API), create and manage Gemini API keys, watch usage and rate limits, set up billing, and use Build mode to generate an app from a prompt. Code then calls the same models through the Gemini Developer API, with official SDKs for Python, JavaScript, Go, Java and C++. Google's terms say AI Studio and the Gemini API are for developers building for professional or business purposes, not for consumer use, and users must be 18 or older. Consumers who want a chat assistant use the Gemini app instead.
The Product
Google AI Studio Features: What You Actually Get
Prompt playground for Google's model lineup
AI Studio lists Gemini models alongside Gemini Omni and Veo (video), Nano Banana (images), Lyria (music), Gemini TTS and Gemini Live. Google's pricing page marks many models "Try it in Google AI Studio", including Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini Omni Flash.
A product engineer compares Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite on the same support-ticket prompt before choosing one for production.
API keys, projects and usage
New users get a project and API key created by default. Rate limits apply per project, not per key, and requests-per-day quotas reset at midnight Pacific time. The dashboard shows usage, your current tier and active rate limits.
A founder creates separate projects for staging and production so a test script can't exhaust the live app's quota.
Build mode and deployment
Build mode generates an app from a prompt, and the app gallery offers projects to remix. Google's billing docs say eligible accounts can deploy up to two full-stack apps from Build mode on the Google Cloud Starter Tier without setting up a Cloud project or billing account.
A marketer prototypes an internal image-captioning tool in Build mode and shares the deployed link with the team.
Paid tier: batch, caching and higher limits
Linking a billing account moves a project to the paid tier: higher rate limits, context caching, the Batch API at half price, access to Google's most advanced models, and the paid data terms. Tiers rise automatically with cumulative spend.
A data team runs overnight document classification through the Batch API at 50% of the standard token price.
Feature recap
- Free browser workspace in all supported regions
- Gemini, Omni, Veo, Nano Banana, Lyria, TTS and Live models
- One-click Gemini API keys and per-project usage dashboards

- Build mode, with free deployment of up to 2 apps for eligible accounts
- Batch API at 50% off and context caching on the paid tier
- SDKs for Python, JavaScript, Go, Java and C++
- Search and Maps grounding (5,000 free requests a month on paid Gemini 3+ models)
The Numbers
Google AI Studio Pricing: Every Plan Explained
AI Studio is free; you pay only for paid-tier Gemini API usage. These are Google's US list prices per 1 million tokens on October 14, 2026 (standard processing; batch and flex are about half). Two models have launch prices that rise on set dates.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Included Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI Studio and the free API tier | $0 | $0 | AI Studio free in all available regions; free API tokens on some models (e.g. Gemini 3.8 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite) up to rate limits shown in AI Studio; content may be used to improve Google's products | Prototyping and learning |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite (paid) | $0.30 input / $2.50 output per 1M tokens | Batch: $0.15 / $1.25 | Google's low-cost model for high-volume tasks, translation and simple data processing | High-volume, cost-sensitive work |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash (paid)Best value | $0.75 input / $3.75 output per 1M tokens through Dec 31, 2026 | $1.50 / $7.50 from Jan 1, 2027; batch half price | Google's most capable Flash model, for agents and long-horizon coding; also on the free tier | Most production apps |
| Gemini 4 Argon (paid only) | $2.00 input / $10.00 output per 1M tokens through Nov 30, 2026 | $4.00 / $20.00 from Dec 1, 2026; batch half price | Google's flagship reasoning model; not on the free tier | Hard reasoning, coding and agent tasks |
| Video: Gemini Omni Flash and Veo 3.1 (paid only) | Omni Flash about $0.10 per second (720p) | Veo 3.1 from $0.05/s (Lite, 720p) to $0.60/s (Standard, 4K) | Video generation and editing; you're charged only for videos that generate successfully | Apps that generate video |
For prototypes, AI Studio costs nothing: the workspace is free, and the free API tier covers several models. Moving to production means linking a billing account and, for new users, prepaying at least $5 in credits (up to $5,000 per purchase). Unused prepaid credits expire after 12 months and aren't refundable unless you switch to postpay, and when the balance hits $0 every API key on that billing account stops until you top up; auto-reload avoids that. Spending caps rise with history: Tier 1 is capped at $250, Tier 2 ($100 spent and 3 days) at $2,000, and Tier 3 ($1,000 and 30 days) at $20,000 to $100,000 or more, with extra spend-rate limits per 10 minutes. Watch the launch pricing: Gemini 4 Argon doubles to $4/$20 per 1M tokens on December 1, 2026, and Gemini 3.8 Flash doubles to $1.50/$7.50 on January 1, 2027. Grounding with Google Search is free for 5,000 requests a month, then $14 per 1,000.
Data use
Free vs paid: what Google does with your prompts
Google's Gemini API terms (last updated April 28, 2026) treat AI Studio and the free API quota as "Unpaid Services". For those, Google uses what you submit and the responses "to provide, improve, and develop Google products and services and machine learning technologies", human reviewers may read and annotate them after Google disconnects them from your account, and the terms say: "Do not submit sensitive, confidential, or personal information to the Unpaid Services."
On the paid tier, Google says it doesn't use your prompts or responses to improve its products, processes them under its data processing addendum, and logs them for a limited time only to detect policy violations. AI Studio itself counts as a paid service, even though it's free, when your account has access to a Google Cloud project with active billing or is a Workspace enterprise account.
Location matters too. Users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK get the paid-tier data terms on every service, including free AI Studio, and anyone offering an app to users there must use the paid tier.
Which Google product?
AI Studio vs the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Gemini Enterprise
The Gemini app (gemini.google.com) is Google's consumer assistant, sold through Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans. Those subscriptions don't include Gemini API usage, and AI Studio's terms say it isn't for consumer use. Google's API pricing page even notes that Gemini 4 Argon "is not available on the Free tier or on the Google AI Pro plan", while Google's subscription page offers Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers; the two statements cover different products.
Google AI Studio plus the Gemini Developer API is the developer route: API keys, per-token billing through prepaid credits, and Google's own terms for the Gemini API.
Vertex AI is now the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (cloud.google.com/vertex-ai redirects to it, and Google calls it the Gemini platform). It's Google Cloud's enterprise platform for building and governing agents, with Model Garden's 200+ Google, third-party and open models, standard Cloud billing, and its own price list, which Google says may differ from the Gemini API's. Google's API pricing page points enterprise customers there for provisioned throughput, dedicated support and volume discounts.
Gemini Enterprise is a different product again: Google Cloud's work agent for employees, sold per seat through sales, which we review separately. It's for staff using an assistant on company data, not for developers calling models.

Who Should Use Google AI Studio?
Best for: developers prototyping AI features
Try prompts and models in the browser, then copy working code with an API key; the free tier is enough to prove an idea.
Best for: technical founders shipping a first AI product
Prepay from $5, use Batch for bulk jobs, and move up the tiers as spend grows, without a Google Cloud sales process.
Skip if: you want a chat assistant for everyday work
AI Studio is a developer tool. For writing, research and help in Gmail and Docs, a Google AI plan or Workspace edition with the Gemini app is the right product.
The Methodology
How We Reviewed Google AI Studio
This is an editorial review, not a documented hands-on test. We didn't use Google AI Studio for this review. It's based on aistudio.google.com, Google's Gemini Developer API pricing, rate-limit and billing documentation, the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service, Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and Gemini Enterprise pages, and the Gemini app's subscription page, all checked on October 14, 2026. Competitor API prices were checked on each vendor's pricing page the same day. Where Google's pages differ, we report both statements. No speed, quality or latency results are claimed.
Our editorial evaluation considers product information, official documentation, pricing, features and professional experience. It is not a claim of documented hands-on testing.

OpenAI API (Playground): OpenAI says Playground usage is billed like regular API usage, so experimenting costs money, while AI Studio is free to use. OpenAI's mid-tier GPT-6.1 Sol is priced like Gemini 4 Argon's launch rate. BestStacked hasn't reviewed the OpenAI API separately.
Claude Developer Platform: Anthropic's API offers the Claude family with batch discounts and prompt caching. Google's free tier and media models (video, music, images) are the difference. BestStacked hasn't reviewed Anthropic's API separately.
Mistral Studio: Mistral's API is hosted in the EU by default and its open-weight models can be self-hosted. Our Mistral Vibe review covers Studio's pricing and training terms.Read our Mistral Studio review →
Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI): The same Gemini models through Google Cloud, with enterprise controls, third-party models and Cloud billing. Google says its prices may differ from the Gemini API's. Pick it when you need Cloud IAM, provisioned capacity or a sales contract.
In The Wild
How People Actually Use Google AI Studio
A solo developer building a side project
Prototype on the free tier with Gemini 3.8 Flash, keep personal or client data out of it, then link billing and prepay $5 before launch so your users' data gets the paid terms.
A startup adding AI video
Test Gemini Omni Flash and Veo 3.1 Lite in AI Studio, budget per second of video (from about $0.05 to $0.10 at 720p), and set auto-reload so credits don't run out mid-render.
An EU company
Paid-tier data terms apply to EEA, Swiss and UK users even on free AI Studio, but apps offered to EU users must run on the paid tier.
The Ecosystem
Google AI Studio Integrations
AI Studio connects to your code through the Gemini API and to Google services through built-in tools.
- →Gemini API SDKs: Python, JavaScript, Go, Java, C++
- →Interactions API for stateful, multi-turn agents
- →Function calling and native tools
- →Grounding with Google Search and Google Maps
- →Batch API
- →Google Cloud billing and Starter Tier deployment
Enterprise features such as provisioned throughput, dedicated support and Model Garden live on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI), not in AI Studio.
